About the Role

Our client, a leading manufacturer of specialized industrial machinery, is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join their engineering department in Mahikeng, North West Province . This role is instrumental in the design, development, and improvement of complex mechanical systems and components for a range of industrial applications, including those within the energy and mining sectors. The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for conceptualizing designs, creating detailed engineering drawings and models using CAD software, performing stress analysis, and overseeing prototype development and testing. Key Responsibilities

• Lead the conceptual design and detailed mechanical design of new industrial machinery and equipment, from initial concept through to production release.
• Utilize advanced CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor) to create 2D drawings, 3D models, and assemblies.
• Perform engineering calculations and simulations, including stress analysis (FEA), fatigue analysis, and kinematic/dynamic analysis, to ensure design integrity and performance.
• Specify materials, components, and manufacturing processes, considering factors such as cost, reliability, and manufacturability.
• Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including electrical engineers, software developers, manufacturing engineers, and project managers, to ensure integrated product development.
• Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and technical documentation.
• Oversee the fabrication of prototypes, conduct rigorous testing, and analyze results to validate designs and identify areas for improvement.
• Troubleshoot and resolve design-related issues during prototype testing and post-production phases.
• Stay abreast of new technologies, materials, and design methodologies in mechanical engineering.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance on design projects.
• Ensure all designs comply with relevant industry standards, safety regulations, and customer specifications.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• A Master's degree is advantageous.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in mechanical design engineering, with a significant focus on industrial machinery or complex mechanical systems.
• Proficiency in industry-standard CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor) and FEA tools.
• Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including statics, dynamics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and material science.
• Experience with manufacturing processes such as machining, welding, casting, and injection molding.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
• Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage multiple design projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
• Experience in designing for energy or mining applications is a plus.
• Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) registration with ECSA is desirable.
