Placements24 is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for our client in Kimberley, Northern Cape. You will design mechanical systems for water and wastewater infrastructure, including pumps, piping, valves, and related equipment.

The role involves creating drawings, specifications, P&IDs, and BOMs, and collaborating with civil, electrical, and control engineers. The ideal candidate has a mechanical engineering degree, 4+ years of relevant experience, and strong CFD/ hydraulics understanding.

About the Role

Our client is a leading engineering firm specializing in water and wastewater treatment solutions, seeking a dedicated Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in Kimberley, Northern Cape. This role involves the design and specification of mechanical systems for critical infrastructure projects, including pumping stations, filtration systems, and distribution networks. You will work on projects that are vital to public health and environmental sustainability. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and materials science, coupled with excellent design and project execution skills. This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to essential infrastructure development.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical systems for water and wastewater treatment plants and infrastructure, including pumps, piping, valves, and mechanical equipment.
• Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, P&IDs, and Bill of Materials (BOMs) using CAD software.
• Perform hydraulic calculations, head loss analysis, and pump sizing for fluid transfer systems.
• Specify materials of construction and mechanical components, ensuring compatibility and longevity in corrosive or demanding environments.
• Collaborate with civil, electrical, and control engineers to ensure integrated system design.
• Conduct site visits and inspections to gather data, assess existing conditions, and provide technical support during construction and commissioning.
• Review vendor submittals and equipment proposals to ensure compliance with design specifications.
• Ensure designs comply with all relevant local, national, and international standards and regulations for water and wastewater systems.
• Troubleshoot mechanical issues encountered during project execution or operation.
• Assist in the preparation of technical reports and project documentation.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in mechanical design, with a focus on water, wastewater, or municipal infrastructure projects.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and experience with other relevant design software (e.g., Revit MEP, Inventor).
• Strong understanding of fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and thermodynamics.
• Familiarity with pump selection, piping design, and valve applications.
• Knowledge of materials commonly used in water treatment applications.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet project deadlines.
• Experience in the Northern Cape region or similar environments is a plus.
