Job summary

R² Engineering Services in Somerset West, South Africa, is recruiting a Mechanical Design Engineer to lead mechanical designs from concept to manufacturing-ready solutions. You will work on advanced propulsion and motion systems within an international product development team.

Ideal candidates have 3+ years in mechanical design, strong 3D CAD skills (Siemens NX preferred), and experience delivering complex assemblies.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or related field.
• 3+ years of experience in mechanical design and/or product development.
• Experience designing complex mechanical systems and assemblies.
• Experience taking designs from concept through detailed design, manufacturing, testing, and implementation.
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software (Siemens NX preferred; others also suitable).
• Experience creating technical drawings and understanding GD&T, materials, manufacturing processes, and production methods.
• Familiarity with DFMA.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and international teams.
• Proactive attitude and eagerness to develop technical skills.
• Experience with rotating equipment, gearboxes, or heavy-industrial systems is advantageous.
• Valid South African work permit or right to work in SA.

Responsibilities

• Designing and developing mechanical components, assemblies, and system layouts from concept to production.
• Creating 3D models, technical drawings, engineering calculations, and analyses.
• Ensuring designs meet specifications, standards, and certifications.
• Collaborating with international engineering teams to integrate designs.
• Performing feasibility studies and validating decisions through calculations and simulations.
• Improving and optimizing existing products and designs.
• Preparing and presenting technical documentation and design findings.
• Contributing to engineering processes, guidelines, and best practices.
