The Manager: Financial Controls is responsible for supporting the design, implementation, monitoring and continuous improvement of financial control practices across MTN Group Fintech and its operating companies.
The role exists to ensure that finance operations remain controlled, standardised, auditable and operationally stable following ERP implementation and ongoing finance transformation. The incumbent bridges the gap between finance process design, ERP adoption, day-to-day operational execution and control effectiveness by monitoring system usage, strengthening control discipline, reducing manual workarounds and supporting consistent application of Group Finance policies, Delegation of Authority requirements and financial governance standards.
Key Performance Areas: Core, essential responsibilities / outputs of the position (KPA's):
Strategy Development and Implementation
- Support the implementation of the Group Fintech financial control, ERP adoption and finance operations control agenda.
- Provide input into financial control frameworks, finance process standards, reconciliation governance, ERP usage discipline and operational control routines.
- Translate financial control priorities into practical workplans, dashboards, remediation trackers and market-level action plans.
- Support the standardisation of finance processes across OpCos, including reconciliations, sub-ledger usage, daily postings, balance sheet substantiation, user access controls and finance evidence management.
Operational Delivery
Financial Controls and Governance
- Monitor and support compliance with Group Finance governance protocols, policies, Delegation of Authority requirements, approval matrices and financial control standards.
- Support the implementation and embedding of financial controls across OpCos, with focus on operating effectiveness, documentation quality and audit readiness.
- Assess control gaps arising from ERP usage, finance process deviations, manual interventions, reconciliations, user access, segregation of duties or reporting practices.
ERP Adoption and Finance Process Discipline
- Drive sustained ERP adoption across OpCos by monitoring system usage, identifying gaps and supporting corrective actions.
- Support OpCos in reducing reliance on spreadsheets, offline reconciliations, manual journals and non-standard workarounds.
- Monitor adherence to standard ERP-enabled finance processes, including sub-ledger usage, workflow approvals, journal discipline, reconciliation routines and month-end close activities.
- Identify ERP usage issues that affect control quality, reporting accuracy, operational efficiency or audit outcomes.
Reconciliations and Financial Hygiene
- Support standardisation and adoption of Group standards for e-money reconciliation across OpCos.
- Monitor balance sheet reconciliation quality, timeliness, substantiation and ageing of reconciling items.
- Track unresolved balances, long-outstanding items, unreconciled accounts and recurring reconciliation issues.
- Support OpCos in identifying root causes of reconciliation differences and implementing corrective actions.
- Promote disciplined month-end, quarter-end and year-end financial hygiene practices.
- Provide visibility to leadership on reconciliation performance, financial hygiene risks and remediation status.
Segregation of Duties, User Access and Control Compliance
- Monitor segregation of duties, user access conflicts and control compliance within finance systems and ERP environments.
- Work with Finance, Technology, Risk, Internal Audit and system administrators to identify and resolve user access risks.
- Support periodic access reviews, role validation exercises and evidence collection for audit purposes.
Audit Readiness and Issue Remediation
- Lead coordination of finance control remediation activities arising from internal audit, external audit, compliance reviews or management assessments.
- Track audit findings, management actions, control owners, due dates, evidence requirements and closure status.
- Support OpCos with practical remediation guidance and evidence preparation.
- Identify repeat findings and systemic control weaknesses and recommend sustainable corrective actions.
Vendor, Managed Service and SLA Performance Management
- Engage ERP vendors, managed service providers and finance support partners to resolve adoption, control and service delivery issues.
- Monitor vendor and managed service performance against agreed SLAs, issue resolution timelines and service quality expectations.
- Escalate unresolved vendor or service issues that affect financial controls, ERP usage, reporting deadlines or OpCo finance operations.
ERP Value Realisation and Continuous Improvement
- Support ERP value realisation by tracking utilisation, control improvements, process efficiency, automation benefits and maturity gains.
- Identify opportunities to improve finance operations through workflow automation, exception reporting, dashboards, control analytics and standardised process design.
- Support simplification of finance processes where controls can be maintained with less manual effort and better system discipline.
- Provide insight into adoption trends, recurring process issues, control bottlenecks and improvement opportunities.
Reporting, Dashboards and Insights
- Maintain dashboards and reports covering ERP adoption, control compliance, reconciliation quality, balance sheet hygiene, audit issue closure, SLA performance and operational stability.
- Prepare periodic updates for Group Finance leadership, OpCo CFOs and relevant governance forums.
- Monitor and report progress against operational and structural KPIs.
Governance
Strategic Meetings
- Provide financial control, ERP adoption, reconciliation and remediation input into governance forums and strategic meetings where required.
- Support discussions on risk mitigation, process controls, audit readiness, finance transformation and ERP stabilisation.
- Provide input into proposals on finance process changes, control improvements, policy updates and system enhancements.
- Support stakeholder consultation on issues requiring cross-functional alignment or management decision.
Escalations
- Escalate issues that may result in severe time, scope, productivity, cost, reporting, audit, compliance or control impact.
- Provide recommended solutions for escalations affecting multiple processes, systems, functions or OpCos.
- Track escalated issues to closure and ensure ownership, timelines and evidence are clearly documented.
- Ensure material financial control risks are escalated through the appropriate Finance, Risk and Audit governance channels.
Functional Tactical
- Execute day-to-day financial control monitoring, issue tracking, stakeholder follow-up and remediation coordination.
- Resolve operational issues within the financial controls and ERP adoption scope.
- Provide input into functional objectives, targets, budgets and performance measures where applicable.
Performance
- Monitor execution against agreed goals, KPIs, control standards and leadership priorities.
- Track progress on ERP adoption, reconciliations, control remediation, financial hygiene, user access reviews and SLA performance.
- Maintain strong working relationships with OpCos, Group Finance, auditors, vendors and managed service providers to sustain performance.
- Recommend corrective actions where delivery gaps, control weaknesses or recurring issues are identified.
Reporting
- Report periodically on progress within the function in line with agreed measurement metrics.
- Provide ad hoc reports on specific projects, issues, audit matters, ERP adoption risks or control remediation activities.
- Ensure reporting supports leadership oversight, performance visibility and timely decision-making.
Budgets
- Provide input into budget requirements linked to financial control initiatives, ERP stabilisation, managed services and process improvement activities where required.
The “Must-haves” we look for in an incumbent
Education:
- Charted Accountant degree (preferred)
- Post graduate degree in Finance and/or equivalent professional- (advantageous)
Experience:
- 5-7 or years of relevant work experience in Finance within a Financial Services/ Fintech company environment
- 2 - 3 years of relevant working managerial experience in / Finance Operations / management accounting domain for Financial Services
- Experience working in a medium to large organization
- Entrepreneurial spirit, self-driven and ability to motivate a fast-paced team
- Worked across diverse cultures and geographies (advantageous)
- Pan Africa multi-cultural experience is advantageous
- Prior experience in Financial Services preferred, with experience within the telecom industry and with Mobile Money being an added advantage
