Placements24 seeks an experienced Lead Grid Modernization Engineer to drive the modernization of energy infrastructure from a remote location within South Africa. The role requires a Master’s/PhD in Electrical Engineering with a focus on power systems and at least 10 years in grid modernization.

• Familiarity with SA energy regulations is advantageous.

About the Role

Our client, a forward-thinking utility innovator, is seeking a highly experienced and visionary Lead Grid Modernization Engineer to spearhead their transformative initiatives. This is a fully remote position, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere within South Africa while driving the future of our energy infrastructure. You will be instrumental in designing, developing, and deploying advanced grid technologies that enhance reliability, efficiency, and sustainability. This role demands a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of grid operations, smart grid technologies, and distributed energy resources (DERs). As a remote-first leader, you will collaborate closely with distributed teams, setting the technical direction for critical grid modernization projects. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for grid modernization, focusing on integrating smart grid technologies, automation, and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI).
• Lead the design and architecture of grid modernization solutions, including SCADA systems, DER management systems (DERMS), and advanced distribution management systems (ADMS).
• Oversee the integration of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems into the existing grid infrastructure.
• Collaborate with regulatory bodies and industry stakeholders to ensure compliance and influence future standards.
• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources for grid modernization initiatives, ensuring successful and timely delivery.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of engineers and technical staff.
• Conduct detailed technical assessments and analyses of grid performance and identify areas for improvement.
• Evaluate and recommend new technologies and vendors for grid modernization projects.
• Develop and deliver technical presentations and reports to senior management and external stakeholders.

Requirements

• Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Power Systems or a related field.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in power systems engineering, with a significant focus on grid modernization and smart grid technologies.
• Demonstrated experience in leading complex engineering projects from conception to completion.
• In-depth knowledge of grid operations, power flow analysis, protection systems, and control strategies.
• Expertise in SCADA, EMS, ADMS, DERMS, AMI, and other utility automation technologies.
• Strong understanding of distributed energy resources (solar, wind, storage) and their impact on the grid.
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and guide remote teams.
• Proficiency in simulation tools such as PSS/E, PowerWorld, or similar grid analysis software.
• Proven ability to manage budgets and project timelines effectively.
• Familiarity with South African energy regulations and utility practices is highly desirable.
