Placements24 seeks a visionary Lead Geologist (Exploration) to head a geology team in Tembisa, Gauteng. You will drive the identification and evaluation of new exploration prospects using seismic data, geological modeling, and risk assessment to shape the company’s resource base.

You will lead a team of geoscientists, integrate cross-disciplinary data, and present evaluations to management and partners while ensuring HSE compliance in a dynamic, global energy setting.

Qualifications

• Master's degree required.
• 10+ years of oil and gas exploration geology experience.
• Expertise in seismic interpretation, sequence stratigraphy and structural geology.
• Proficiency with geological modeling software (Petrel, DecisionSpace) and data management systems.
• Strong understanding of basin analysis and petroleum systems.
• Demonstrated leadership and team management skills.
• Excellent analytical, communication and presentation abilities.
• Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
• Experience in Frontier and Mature basin exploration is advantageous.
• Published work or presentations at industry conferences is a plus.

About the Role

Our client, a prominent player in the global energy landscape, is actively seeking a visionary Lead Geologist specializing in Exploration to join their esteemed geological team in Tembisa, Gauteng . This pivotal role involves spearheading the identification and evaluation of new exploration prospects, leveraging cutting-edge geological and geophysical data. You will be at the forefront of strategic decision-making regarding acreage acquisition and prospect maturation, directly influencing the company's future resource base. The successful candidate will lead a team of geoscientists, fostering innovation and ensuring the highest standards of geological interpretation and risk assessment. This challenging position is based in our operations center in Tembisa .

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the geological interpretation of seismic, well, and other subsurface data to identify and delineate hydrocarbon plays and prospects.
• Develop and manage geological models for exploration basins, incorporating structural, stratigraphic, and sedimentological elements.
• Collaborate closely with geophysicists, reservoir engineers, and drilling engineers to integrate data and refine prospect evaluations.
• Perform detailed prospect risking and uncertainty analyses to support investment decisions.
• Provide geological input for exploration well planning, including target selection, prognosis, and risk mitigation strategies.
• Stay abreast of the latest geological concepts, exploration technologies, and industry trends.
• Manage and mentor a team of geologists and geoscience technicians, promoting technical excellence and collaborative workflows.
• Contribute to the company's exploration strategy and portfolio management.
• Prepare and present geological evaluations and recommendations to management and partners.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Requirements

• Master's degree in Geology or a related Earth Science discipline.
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in oil and gas exploration geology, with a proven track record of discovering commercial reserves.
• Expertise in seismic interpretation, sequence stratigraphy, and structural geology.
• Proficiency with geological modeling software (e.g., Petrel, DecisionSpace) and data management systems.
• Strong understanding of basin analysis and petroleum systems.
• Demonstrated leadership and team management skills.
• Excellent analytical, communication, and presentation abilities.
• Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
