Job summary

The President Hotel in Cape Town is seeking an enthusiastic maintenance apprentice to support the hotel’s HVAC team. The role focuses on inspections, preventative maintenance, and learning under supervision in a busy hospitality environment.

You will work with senior technicians, gain hands-on experience with filters, coils, and ductwork, and develop safe work practices. A strong team attitude and willingness to learn are essential.

Qualifications

• NQF Level 3 or equivalent in Refrigeration or Air Conditioning.
• Technical or vocational training in HVAC is preferred.
• 1-2 years' relevant experience, including an internship or apprenticeship.
• Hospitality, healthcare or large building environment experience is advantageous.
• Basic knowledge of HVAC tools and equipment.
• Willingness to learn, follow instructions and work under supervision.
• Physically fit for work at heights, in ceiling spaces and confined areas.
• Good communication and a positive team attitude.

Responsibilities

• Assist with inspections and maintenance of filters, coils, condensers, compressors, motors, thermostats and ductwork.
• Clean and replace filters, grilles and air vents in guest rooms and public areas.
• Monitor system performance and report unusual noises, faults or potential failures.
• Support senior technicians with fault-finding and minor repairs under supervision.
• Learn to identify poor airflow, refrigerant issues and electrical faults.
• Participate in planned preventive maintenance and complete checklists.
• Record completed tasks in OMNI or other internal maintenance systems.
• Follow safety procedures around electrical systems, refrigerants and confined spaces.

• Technical or vocational training in HVAC is preferred.
• 1-2 years' relevant experience, including an internship or apprenticeship.
• Experience within hospitality, healthcare or a large building environment is advantageous.
• Basic knowledge of HVAC tools and equipment.
• Willingness to learn, follow instructions and work under supervision.
• Physically fit and able to work at heights, in ceiling spaces and confined areas.
• Good communication skills and a positive team attitude.
• A disciplined approach to safety, cleanliness and equipment care.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist with inspections and maintenance of filters, coils, condensers, compressors, motors, thermostats and ductwork.
• Clean and replace filters, grilles and air vents in guest rooms and public areas.
• Monitor system performance and report unusual noises, faults or potential failures.
• Support senior technicians with fault-finding and minor repairs under supervision.

• Follow safety procedures when working around electrical systems, refrigerants and confined spaces.
• Use the required personal protective equipment and follow lock-out/tag-out procedures.
• Clean and return tools after use, report damaged or missing equipment and help organise spare parts.
• Follow guest-room access procedures, entering only with supervisor permission or accompaniment and clearly announcing your department.
• Keep work areas clean and ensure tools and equipment do not obstruct guest access or walkways.
• Communicate progress to supervisors and ask for guidance when required.
• Participate in training, toolbox talks and departmental briefings.
