Job description

This role will have a focus on Private Market Investments, specifically the analysis and screening of Private Market managers’ and investment opportunities across South Africa, Africa and Globally. In doing so this role supports the asset accumulation strategies of the Private Market’s business in the aforementioned regions through providing Investment analysis, high conviction manager recommendations, analysis on existing managers, research and overall support to the private markets team that assist in building a diversified portfolio of Private Market assets.

The Investment Analyst will be required to screen opportunities, conduct preliminary assements, support due diligence processes, assist with transaction structuring and modelling, Support in the legal review and implementation phase, monitor and provide on-going analysis of a broad range of existing Private Market’s assets held via several investment managers across a range of differing investment strategies which include Private Credit, Infrastructure, Direct Property and Private Equity - ensuring risk and return are optimised and performance is maintained in line with expectations.

The Investment Analyst will also be required to engage with a range of internal and external stakeholders on various matters which will include and are not limited to (1) report backs to clients on the fund performance; (2) general information sessions on private market investing; and (3) engaging where required on key industry issues and trends contributing to AFI’s thought leadership on such matters.

Ensure that Alexforbes Investments has market-leading research and engagements:

• Conduct private market investment research across with specific focus on the South African and Africa (ex-South Africa) geographies; but not limited to these with occasional global focus.
• Work in collaboration with the private markets team to manage the research calendar, on-going governance committees, and general manager engagements.
• Ensure work processes and procedures are followed e.g. systems and templates used for developing research views and documenting such research are up to date a correctly utilised.
• Alexforbes Investments manager research is current and all relevant information is up to date for all managers allocated to the specialist to communicate to the broader team.
• All research conducted is maintained to the required standard and follows required Alexforbes Investments processes
• ESG considerations are fully incorporated within the research process, and analysts make active use of ESG systems when conducting strategy research.
• Research output follows and is consistent with the Alexforbes Investments research process.
• Manager characterization analysis is accurate, reliable, and consistent.
• Work closely with and build key relationships with external stakeholders e.g. asset managers and from time to time meet with and present to clients, and
• Keep abreast of any changes occurring within the Private Market industry i.e. staff moves, interesting investment themes, new teams, or companies

Support the private markets capability at Alexforbes Investments:

• Screen opportunities and conduct preliminary assessments.
• Prepare Research Reports and meeting notes.
• Assist with transaction implementation and legal review.
• Monitor and provide on-going analysis of portfolios (fund performance, valuations, risk management, compliance, and reporting).
• Ensure that contribution to Investment Committees and other governance committees is prepared well in advance and delivered on time.
• Collaborate with the broader investment team and ensure an effective engagement between all partners in the AF Investments Private Markets Program.
• Liaise with Mercer to share research and ideas and ensure an on-going understanding and oversight for the global private market products available.
• Support the Head of Private Markets as the key individual on the various governance boards associated with our local private markets portfolio as required, to ensure that Alexforbes Investments invested funds are well-governed and are managed in line with the stipulated requirements.
• Contribute to thought pieces on private markets that will position the business as a thought leader in the private market space and increase interest in private markets within our client base.
• Stay informed of developments in the market, understand the effect and impact on portfolios and propose action if necessary.
• Provide oversight of various operational aspects of the private markets portfolio that requires investment insight e.g. implementation cycle of new investments and current investments.

Stakeholder Engagements:

• Presentations to internal stakeholders, as necessary.
• Assistance in the writing of public research documents.
• Collaborate, liaise and work closely with the broader investment and advisory businesses
• Conceptually explain and create clear understanding of return outcomes from private markets portfolios.
• Support the Head of Private Markets in managing and maintaining existing strategic partnerships and industry relationships within the Private Markets portfolio.
• Ensure all information is correctly communicated when required to stakeholders, manager day to day interactions with the wider business needs.

Job Requirements:

• CFA or CA(SA)
• RE5
• Matric.
• 3-7 years in Financial Services (Investment Banking, Strategy Consulting, Private Equity)
• Experience in Private Markets/Alternative investments, Multi-manager, or Fund of Fund experience.
• Experience in the critical assessment of fund management teams and the structuring and valuation of unlisted assets across South Africa and Africa; the integration and management of Environmental, Social and Governance factors within an investment process and a deep understanding of impact investment in the context of emerging markets will be an advantage.
