Our client is seeking a proactive and diligent Credit Controller to join their finance team in Soweto. This role is crucial for managing customer accounts, minimizing outstanding debt, and ensuring timely collection of payments. You will be responsible for liaising with clients, negotiating payment terms, and implementing credit control policies effectively. The ideal candidate is persuasive, detail‑oriented, and possesses strong communication and negotiation skills, contributing to the company's financial health and maintaining positive client relationships within a local context.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform credit checks and onboard new customer accounts
- Collect outstanding debts within KPI targets
- Allocate and reconcile customer payments
- Manage overdue accounts, payment plans, demand letters and account holds
- Escalate bad debts and present high-risk accounts to the Risk Committee
- Prepare weekly and month-end age analysis reports with commentary
- Process debit order runs, refunds and adjustment journals
- Maintain accurate customer master data
- Support audit requirements and ensure compliance with policies and procedures
- Drive continuous improvements in credit processes and efficiencies
- Resolve customer queries
- Manage a full 30day or 7day customer portfolio
- Conduct proactive collections in line with customer terms
- Investigate and resolve queries (pricing, PODs, RFCs, shortages)
- Perform accurate allocations and support unallocated clearing
- Monitor and act on credit limits, stop supply, and payment behaviour
- Prepare monthly portfolio reports with follow-up actions
- Administer credit applications, limit reviews, and customer master data
- Work closely with Sales, Dispatch, RFC and Warehouse to close disputes
- Ensure all customer notes, promises to pay and escalations are captured daily
- Adhere to company SOPs, credit policies, and month-end deadlines
- Credit application approvals and ongoing vetting of credit limits
- Monitor and release blocked orders as a high priority to ensure continued excellent customer service
- Payment allocations to be completed within set turnaround times
- Manage account queries. Respond timeously & accurately to internal & external account queries received through all business channels
- Collection of overdue accounts
- Adjustment Journals & Credit Notes
- Recommend customers for handover/collection
- Record keeping notes/customer records must be digitally maintained in the SAP system as per company policy and procedures and in conformance to all legal requirements for document storage.
- Ongoing communication & collaboration with other departments informing them of account status
- Debt collection – Contact clients to collect outstanding payments via phone, email, and statements
- Account reconciliation – Match payments against invoices, resolve discrepancies, and maintain accurate records
- Credit risk monitoring – Assess customer creditworthiness, flag high-risk accounts, and recommend credit limits
- Reporting – Prepare weekly/monthly debtor reports for management
- Customer liaison – Build professional relationships while firmly enforcing payment terms
- Legal escalation – Initiate handover to attorneys or debt collectors when necessary
Job Experience and Skills Required
- Degree or National Diploma in Credit Management / Accounting, or Credit Management Certificate (Level 4 or 5)
- 5+ years credit control & credit risk management experience
- Proven track record in collecting outstanding debt successfully
- Experience within a high volume, fast paced environment
- Experience with Accpac or Microsoft Dynamics
- Intermediate to advanced MS Excel
- Strong analytical mindset with a passion for process improvement
- Ability to balance firm collections with strong customer relationship management
- 3+ years experience in credit control within an FMCG environment
- Tertiary qualification in finance or related is necessary, with matric being a minimum requirement
- Previous exposure with chain stores would be first prize
- System familiarity to MS Dynamics 365
Requirements
- Valid drivers license
- Credit Management II or III preferred
- 35 years experience in a full-function Credit Control role
- Strong SAP exposure essential
- Proven ability to manage an independent book
- Required Technical Competencies:
- SAP (FBL5N, basic ZFI reports, age analysis)
- Intermediate Excel (pivot tables, lookups, filters)
- Strong account reconciliation skills
- Experience with consumer or FMCG an advantage
- Solid understanding of debtors ageing and risk indicators
- High accuracy and attention to detail
- Strong communication and customer service
- Accountability for own portfolio

- Professional, mature, and reliable
- Relevant finance or Credit Management qualification will be advantageous
- Currently completing or has obtained a formal Credit Management qualification is essential
