Job summary

Schindler Lifts (Pty) Ltd (South Africa) is hiring an Installation Manager to lead lift/escalator installation projects across the Western Cape. You will plan, coordinate, and supervise teams to deliver high-quality work, safely, on time, and within budget, while ensuring compliance with standards and client requirements.

The role requires 5-7 years in lifts or related sectors, with a strong track record in large projects, and hands-on leadership of technical teams and subcontractors.

Qualifications

• Higher Certificate, National Diploma, or Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Electromechanical Engineering (Trade Tested qualification required).
• Project Management certification.
• Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) certification.
• Valid Drivers license.
• 5-7 years experience within the lift, construction, or engineering sectors.
• 3-5 years in a supervisory or management capacity.
• Proven track record of executing large-scale installation projects.
• Direct experience leading technical teams, site supervisors, and subcontractors.
• In-depth knowledge of lift/escalator installation practices, engineering drawing interpretation, and Quality Management Systems.
• Practical experience in construction project management, contract administration, resource planning, budgeting, and cost control.
• Microsoft Office Suite and SAP knowledge, working familiarity with ERP and project management systems is advantageous.
• Frequent travel to customer sites and active construction projects.
• Sound decision making and good problem-solving skills.
• Strong attention to detail and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• The ability to work under pressure and to deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Oversee installation projects from initial planning to handover.
• Develop installation schedules, allocate resources, and monitor labour productivity and material availability.
• Drive project-timelines and milestones to ensure on-time delivery within contractual commitments.
• Manage project risks, optimize installation processes, and implement mitigation strategies.
• Coordinate activities between site teams, suppliers, subcontractors, and commissioning/service departments.
• Lead and promote a zero-harm workplace safety culture.
• Adhere to OHS legislation, company policies, and industry codes.
• Conduct site inspections, safety audits, and incident investigations with corrective actions.
• Monitor quality inspections against drawings and specifications.
• Oversee snag list completion, defect rectification, and continuous improvement.
• Control costs, variations, forecasts, and expenditure to maximize profitability.
• Deliver accurate reporting on project financial performance.
• Act as primary technical contract for clients, consultants, and main contractors.
• Attend site progress meetings and manage client expectations.

Key Responsibilities

The Installation Manager will be responsible for planning, coordinating, managing, and supervising all elevator, escalator, and moving walk installation projects within the assigned region by ensuring that projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with company standards, contractual requirements, statutory regulations, and quality expectations.

• Develop installation schedules, allocate resources, and monitor labour productivity and material availability
• Drive project-timelines and milestones to ensure on-time delivery within agreed contractual commitments
• Manage project risks, optimize installation processes, and implement effective mitigation strategies
• Seamlessly coordinate activities between site teams, suppliers, subcontractors, and commissioning / service departments.
• Lead and promote a zero-harm workplace safety culture
• Ensure strict adherence to Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) legislation, company policies, and applicable industry codes and regulations
• Conduct site inspections, safety audits, incident investigations, and implement corrective actions
• Monitor quality inspections throughout execution to ensure compliance with engineering drawings, design specifications, and customer requirements
• Oversee snag list completion, defect rectification, and continues improvement initiatives
• Control project costs, variations, forecasts, and expenditure across labour, materials, and sub-contractors to maximize profitability
• Deliver accurate, timely reporting on project financial performance
• Act as the primary technical contract for clients, consultants, developers, and main contractors
• Attend site progress meetings, manage client expectations, and resolve commercial or technical queries promptly
• Lead, coach, and mentor installation supervisors, technicians, and site personnel
• Conduct regular performance discussions, identify skill gaps, and drive competency and succession planning
• Provide technical direction on complex installation challenges and support the integration of new technologies and products
