Job description

Help us build the best-run team in our industry

Superior Spa & Bath has been designing and building spas, hot tubs and baths in Cape Town since 1983. We are in the middle of a rebuild: modernising how we work, writing down how every job is done, and growing again. Now we want our first dedicated HR person, someone who makes sure every member of our team knows what their job is, has what they need to do it well, and is measured on it fairly.

About us

We are an independent group of three companies with about 50 people: our factory and showroom in Montague Gardens, our Cape Town service team and our Gauteng branch in Randburg. We build our own shells, frames and plumbing, and sell and service spas and saunas across South Africa through our branches and dealers. Our people range from welders, vacuum formers and woodworkers to service technicians, sales consultants and office staff.

The role

This is a hands‑on role reporting directly to the Managing Director, and you won't be on your own. Our outsourced labour‑law partner provides advice, chairs disciplinary hearings and supports CCMA matters, and you will run day‑to‑day HR on their online portal. Your job is to make HR happen on the ground: consistently, fairly and on time.

In your first year, success looks like this. Every employee has a signed contract, a current job description and clear KPIs. Everyone has had at least two performance conversations. Disciplinary matters are handled consistently and properly documented. Our organogram reflects how the business really works. And the MD gets a monthly people report he relies on.

What you'll do
  • Own employment contracts and personnel records for all staff across our three companies, using the online HR portal.
  • Write and maintain job descriptions and KPIs for every role, with the MD and line supervisors.
  • Run probation reviews, regular check‑ins and annual performance appraisals, and help supervisors hold those conversations well.
  • Manage the disciplinary process: advise supervisors, prepare investigations and warnings, schedule hearings with outsourced labour‑law partner’s chairpersons and keep complete records.
  • Work with the MD to shape our organogram and company structure as we rebuild and grow.
  • Plan and book staff training, and run induction for new starters.
  • Report our people numbers every month: headcount, absenteeism, overtime, turnover, warnings and reviews completed.
What we’re looking for
Required
  • A degree or diploma in Human Resource Management, Industrial Psychology, Labour Relations or similar.
  • At least 4 years of hands‑on HR experience, including at least 2 years in manufacturing, engineering, production or another factory or field‑based workplace.
  • Experience running performance reviews or appraisals.
  • Experience preparing disciplinary documentation: investigations, warnings and hearing packs.
  • Working knowledge of the BCEA and the LRA.
  • Confident with HR software and Microsoft Office or Google Workspace.
Preferred
  • SABPP registration.
  • Experience with outsourced labour‑law service providers.
  • Has set up job descriptions and KPI scorecards from scratch.
  • Experience with Organograms and process implementation software.
  • Own transport.
What to expect

You'll be building from a low base. Many roles have no written job description yet, and some records need catching up. You'll need to be firm with supervisors and fair with staff, and as comfortable on the factory floor as at a desk. If you like building systems that stick, there's a lot here for you to own.

What we offer
  • R30,000 – R38,000 per month, cost to company, depending on experience.
  • A permanent position after a 3-month probation period.
  • Provident fund membership.
  • Direct access to the MD and a real say in how the business is shaped.
  • Expert labour‑law backing from outsourced labour‑law partner.
