Job summary

Placements24 in Port Elizabeth is seeking an experienced Environmental Services Team Lead to oversee the hospital cleaning and sanitation team, ensure infection control, and maintain patient safety standards. You will lead, train, and motivate staff, manage supplies, and ensure regulatory compliance in a busy healthcare environment.

The ideal candidate will have strong leadership, hospital cleaning protocol knowledge, and a commitment to safety.

Qualifications

• Minimum 4 years in environmental services or cleaning, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role, preferably in a healthcare setting.
• Demonstrated knowledge of infection control principles and hospital cleaning standards.
• Proven leadership and team management skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage time efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Proficiency in English; knowledge of isiXhosa is an advantage.
• Understanding of safety data sheets (SDS) and the safe use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
• Flexibility to work different shifts as required, including weekends and public holidays.
• Must be physically capable of performing cleaning duties and lifting moderate weights.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and coordinate the activities of the environmental services team, ensuring efficient workflow and task completion.
• Implement and enforce infection control policies and procedures throughout the facility.
• Conduct regular inspections of patient rooms, wards, operating theaters, and public areas to ensure cleanliness and safety standards are met.
• Train new team members on cleaning techniques, equipment usage, safety protocols, and infection control practices.
• Manage inventory of cleaning chemicals, equipment, and supplies, ensuring adequate stock and cost-effective utilization.
• Respond promptly and effectively to cleaning emergencies and special requests.
• Collaborate with nursing staff, facilities management, and other departments to address cleaning needs.
• Maintain accurate records of cleaning activities, staff attendance, and supply usage.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including those from health authorities.
• Promote a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement within the department.
