Job summary

Helderberg Personnel seeks a disciplined individual for a demanding farm role in the Karoo region. You will perform independent manual labour, maintain fencing, roads, and water systems, and support infrastructure across rugged terrain.

You'll manage farm vehicles, monitor game counts, assist with hunting operations, and uphold strong security against poaching. The job requires self-discipline, reliability, and the ability to work alone in a remote setting.

Qualifications

• Physical fitness to perform demanding manual labour in challenging terrain.
• Self-discipline with strict maintenance schedules and security protocols.
• Ability to work independently in remote environments.
• 15+ years of practical experience on SA game reserves or farms; knowledge of Karoo terrain preferred.
• Strong practical troubleshooting in mechanics, plumbing, fencing, construction and electrical systems.
• Matric certificate; valid SA driver’s licence; clean criminal record and sober habits.

Responsibilities

• Perform manual labour and maintenance of farm infrastructure, fences, roads, water systems and basic electricals.
• Maintain farm vehicles and machinery, including tractor and bakkie.
• Monitor game counts, water points, veld condition and animal welfare across rugged terrain.
• Assist with hunting operations including field tracking and carcass handling.
• Maintain boundary security and anti-poaching measures.
• Supervise contractors and workers on projects as needed.

Job description

Key Responsibilities

• Independent Physical Labour & Infrastructure Maintenance: Personally perform manual labour for routine property maintenance, including repairs to farm fencing, dirt roads, water/wind/solar pump systems, dams, grounds, and basic electrical infrastructure
• Mechanical & Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and continuously service farm vehicles and machinery, including a tractor, grader, motorcycles, and bakkie
• Field & Game Monitoring: Maintain a disciplined routine for game counts, checking water points, erosion control, and monitoring the general condition of the veld and animals across rugged terrain
• Hunting Operations Support: Assist with all physical requirements of game hunting operations, including field tracking and the handling and processing of heavy carcasses.
• Boundary Security: Maintain a high level of vigilance through regular, proactive anti-poaching measures
• Ad Hoc Contractor Supervision: Manage daily operations independently while supervising general workers or specialised contractor teams when they are brought onto the farm for specific projects

Requirements

• Physical Fitness & Endurance: Ability to perform physical manual labour in challenging climate and terrain conditions
• Self-Discipline: A high level of personal responsibility and structure to maintain strict maintenance schedules, security protocols, and daily routines without direct supervision
• Independent / One-Person Approach: Proven ability to work independently in a remote environment, take full personal ownership of farm operations, and rely on external assistance only when necessary
• Practical Experience: Minimum 15 years of proven, practical experience on South African game reserves, farms, or nature reserves. Knowledge of Karoo / Klein Karoo terrain and game species is preferred
• Technical Versatility: Strong practical troubleshooting and repair skills in mechanics, basic plumbing, fencing, construction, and electrical systems
• Qualifications & Documentation: Minimum Matric certificate (higher agricultural or technical qualifications would be an advantage); valid South African driver’s licence; clean criminal record and strict sober habits
