Placements24 is seeking an experienced Fleet Operations Manager to oversee vehicle fleet operations in Gauteng. You will lead a team of fleet technicians and dispatchers, drive efficiency, and minimize downtime while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Responsible for budgeting, vendor negotiations, and strategic fleet planning to support business growth with a focus on cost control and operational excellence.

Qualifications

• 7+ years in fleet management or operations with supervisory experience.
• Experience leading maintenance, dispatch, and drivers in a large fleet.
• Knowledge of SA transport laws, safety and environmental compliance.

About the Role

Our client, a prominent national transport company, is seeking a dedicated and experienced Fleet Operations Manager to oversee their extensive vehicle fleet operations in Tembisa, Gauteng . This critical role involves ensuring the optimal performance, maintenance, and safety of a large fleet of commercial vehicles. You will be responsible for leading a team of fleet technicians and dispatchers, driving efficiency, and minimizing downtime across all operations. Key Responsibilities

• Manage the day-to-day operations of the company's fleet, ensuring efficient scheduling, routing, and dispatching of vehicles.
• Develop and implement comprehensive preventative maintenance programs to minimize vehicle downtime and repair costs.
• Oversee the procurement, licensing, and registration of new vehicles and the disposal of old assets.
• Ensure compliance with all national and provincial transportation regulations, safety standards, and environmental laws.
• Manage fuel consumption and implement strategies to optimize fuel efficiency across the fleet.
• Supervise and train fleet maintenance personnel, dispatchers, and drivers, fostering a culture of safety and accountability.
• Monitor vehicle performance metrics, analyze data, and generate reports on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as utilization, costs, and safety incidents.
• Negotiate contracts with suppliers, service providers, and insurance companies to secure favorable terms.
• Respond to and manage vehicle breakdowns and emergency situations effectively.
• Develop and manage the fleet operations budget, ensuring cost-effective operations.

Requirements

• A minimum of 7 years of experience in fleet management, operations management, or a closely related field, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity.
• Demonstrated experience managing a large commercial vehicle fleet within Tembisa or the surrounding Gauteng area.
• In-depth knowledge of fleet maintenance best practices, vehicle diagnostics, and repair procedures.
• Strong understanding of South African transportation laws, road safety regulations, and environmental compliance.
• Proven ability to manage budgets, control costs, and negotiate with vendors.
• Excellent leadership, team management, and communication skills.
• Proficiency in fleet management software and data analysis tools.
• A relevant tertiary qualification (e.g., in Logistics, Operations Management) is preferred.
• Valid driver's license and a clean driving record are essential.
• Ability to work flexible hours and respond to emergencies as needed.
