Job summary

ALPLA RECYCLING SA (PTY) LTD in Ballito, KwaZulu-Natal, is seeking a qualified Fitter & Turner for maintenance, fabrication and plant support. You will read drawings, refurbish parts, and perform preventive maintenance on pumps, gearboxes, motors and conveyors.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 with Mathematics & Science essentials.
• Qualified Trade Tested Fitter & Turner with post-apprenticeship experience.
• 5 years' experience in workshop machining and industrial maintenance.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings and tolerances.
• SAP or CMMS experience; good documentation skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform precision turning, milling, drilling, grinding and fabrication.
• Maintain and refurbish parts where OEM spares unavailable.
• Read engineering drawings and specs accurately.
• Conduct basic welding and fabrication work as needed.
• Overhaul pumps, gearboxes, motors, conveyors, and rotating equipment.
• Assist with fault-finding, RCA, and preventative maintenance tasks.
• Generate workshop reports and maintain records.
• Support shutdowns and plant improvement projects.

Fitter & Turner

Workshop & Machining

• Perform precision turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and fabrication of mechanical components
• Manufacture or refurbish parts where OEM spares are unavailable or lead times are excessive
• Read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, and technical specifications accurately
• Perform basic welding and fabrication work (cutting, grinding, shaping, repairs, modifications, improvements)
• Maintain workshop tools, machines, and housekeeping to high standards
• Conduct routine checks on workshop equipment, tool cupboards, and tool control systems
• Maintenance & Plant Support
• Overhaul, rebuild, and refurbish pumps, gearboxes, motors, conveyors, and rotating equipment
• Mechanical seals, bearings and coupling fitment and removal
• Perform equipment alignment, and condition monitoring
• Assist with breakdown response, fault-finding, and corrective maintenance
• Execute preventative and planned maintenance tasks as per schedule
• Support shutdown activities and plant improvement projects
• Conduct QC inspections on incoming repaired items, refurbished components, and new spares
• Generate workshop reports, job feedback, and maintenance documentation
• Complete check sheets and job cards accurately and timeously
• Assist and contribute to Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations and corrective actions
• Create and update work instructions and standard repair procedures
• Maintain high attention to detail and workmanship standards
• Link closely with Stores and Maintenance Planning regarding spare parts requirements
• Assist with material management of workshop steels, plates, and salvageable materials
• Identify and prepare materials required for machining and fabrication jobs
• Supporting other artisans and maintenance team members as required
• Contribute proactively to continuous improvement and reliability initiatives
• Ensure compliance with safety standards, SOPs, and housekeeping requirements

• Qualified Trade Tested Fitter & Turner
• 5 years' post-apprenticeship experience in workshop machining and industrial plant maintenance
• Strong experience with lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, and measuring equipment
• Basic welding and fabrication experience
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and tolerances
• Experience of participating in fault-finding and RCA processes
• Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, basic reporting)
• SAP or similar CMMS User

• Physically fit and able to work in workshop and plant environments
• Valid Code 8 driver's license and own reliable vehicle
