Job summary

ALPLA Group in Ballito, South Africa, is seeking a qualified Fitter & Turner with at least 5 years of post-apprenticeship experience to join our workshop maintenance team. You will perform precision turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and fabrication of mechanical components, read engineering drawings, and support reliability initiatives.

This role requires reading tolerances, basic welding, equipment overhaul, RCA participation, and close collaboration with Stores and Maintenance Planning.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 with Math and Science required.
  • Trade-tested fitter and Turner qualification mandatory.
  • Minimum 5 years post-apprenticeship workshop experience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform precision turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and fabrication of mechanical components.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and tolerances accurately.
  • Maintain workshop tools, equipment, and housekeeping to high standards.
  • Support maintenance and reliability improvements and RCA investigations.

Job description

  • Perform precision turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and fabrication of mechanical components
  • Manufacture or refurbish parts where OEM spares are unavailable or lead times are excessive
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, tolerances, and technical specifications accurately
  • Perform basic welding and fabrication work (cutting, grinding, shaping, repairs, modifications, improvements)
  • Maintain workshop tools, machines, and housekeeping to high standards
  • Conduct routine checks on workshop equipment, tool cupboards, and tool control systems
  • Overhaul, rebuild, and refurbish pumps, gearboxes, motors, conveyors, and rotating equipment
  • Mechanical seals, bearings and coupling fitment and removal
  • Perform equipment alignment, and condition monitoring
  • Assist with breakdown response, fault-finding, and corrective maintenance
  • Execute preventative and planned maintenance tasks as per schedule
  • Support shutdown activities and plant improvement projects
  • Conduct QC inspections on incoming repaired items, refurbished components, and new spares
  • Generate workshop reports, job feedback, and maintenance documentation
  • Complete check sheets and job cards accurately and timeously
  • Assist and contribute to Root Cause Analysis (RCA) investigations and corrective actions
  • Create and update work instructions and standard repair procedures
  • Maintain high attention to detail and workmanship standards
  • Link closely with Stores and Maintenance Planning regarding spare parts requirements
  • Assist with material management of workshop steels, plates, and salvageable materials
  • Identify and prepare materials required for machining and fabrication jobs
  • Supporting other artisans and maintenance team members as required
  • Contribute proactively to continuous improvement and reliability initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, SOPs, and housekeeping requirements

What makes you great

  • 5 years' post-apprenticeship experience in workshop machining and industrial plant maintenance
  • Strong experience with lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, and measuring equipment
  • Basic welding and fabrication experience
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and tolerances
  • Experience of participating in fault-finding and RCA processes
  • Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, basic reporting)
  • SAP or similar CMMS User
  • Good documentation and reporting skills
  • Physically fit and able to work in workshop and plant environments
  • Valid Code 8 driver's license and own reliable vehicle
