Job summary

Sappi in Durban, South Africa, is seeking an experienced Fitter & Turner to ensure optimum plant availability through maintenance, overhaul, and repair of machinery and mechanical systems, in line with safety standards.

You will overhaul industrial rotating equipment such as pumps, gearboxes and conveyors, perform precision fitting and alignment, and document maintenance activities in SAP while promoting reliability and efficiency across the site.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 and N2 Engineering while N3 Engineering would be preferred.
  • Recognised Trade Test Certificate as a Mechanical Fitter and Turner.
  • 2 years post-apprenticeship experience in a heavy engineering environment will be advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Perform the overhauling, maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of industrial rotating equipment, including pumps, gearboxes, fans, compressors, conveyors, agitators, and associated mechanical equipment.
  • Strip, inspect, measure, assess, assemble, and test equipment in accordance with OEM specifications, engineering standards, and maintenance procedures.
  • Carry out precision fitting, alignment, balancing, and adjustment of mechanical equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
  • Modify, improve, or fabricate mechanical equipment and components as required to improve equipment reliability and operational efficiency.
  • Conduct fault finding, troubleshooting, and repairs during plant breakdowns and emergency maintenance situations.
  • Participate in root cause failure analysis (RCFA) investigations and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence of equipment failures, complying with required specifications and quality standards.
  • Assist with basic fabrication, welding preparations, and mechanical workshop activities where required.
  • Execute maintenance activities in accordance with SAP notifications, work orders, planned maintenance schedules, and shutdown plans.
  • Complete all maintenance records, notifications, task feedback, and work order confirmations accurately within the SAP system.
  • Identify, order, and draw required spare parts and materials from stores using SAP picking lists and inventory processes.
  • Participate in planned plant shutdowns, major overhauls, and project-related maintenance activities.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and perform emergency repairs to minimise plant downtime.
  • Be available for standby duties, overtime, after-hours callouts, weekend work, and emergency maintenance as operational requirements dictate.
  • Understand, comply with, and actively promote all Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality (SHEQ) requirements, procedures, and standards.

We’re on the lookout for an experienced Fitter & Turner to ensure optimum plant availability through maintenance, overhaul, and repair of machinery, equipment, and mechanical systems according to engineering specifications and safety standards, contributing to overall equipment effectiveness.

As a Fitter & Turner, you will be responsible for:

  • Conduct risk assessments and identify hazards before commencing maintenance activities
  • Report all unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, equipment defects, and operational risks to the direct supervisor without delay
  • Participate in SHEQ incident investigations and assist in identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions
  • Ensure all tools, equipment, and work areas are maintained in a safe, clean, and orderly condition at all times
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping standards in accordance with 5S principles and company requirements
  • Share technical knowledge and best practices with other Fitters and Turners, apprentices, trainees, and maintenance personnel
  • Provide mentorship and coaching to less experienced artisans where required
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving equipment reliability, maintenance efficiency, cost reduction, and workplace safety
  • Work effectively with production personnel, supervisors, planners, engineers, and other maintenance disciplines to achieve departmental objectives
  • Maintain workshop tools, machinery, and measuring instruments in good working condition
  • Ensure all maintenance documentation and inspection records are completed accurately and timeously
  • Assist with the development and updating of maintenance procedures and standard operating practices
  • Perform any other duties within the scope, competency, and grading of a Mechanical Workshop Fitter and Turner as assigned by supervision or management
What are we looking for?
