Job summary

Sheldon Recruitment And Selection is seeking a skilled Fitter and Turner with a Red Seal for a sawmilling plant in South Africa. The role demands 15+ years in sawmilling, extensive hydraulic/pneumatic experience, and ability to service conveyors, gear boxes, and related equipment.

Welding expertise is required, with willingness to work irregular hours, standby, and overtime. English proficiency is essential; Xhosa is advantageous. Matric/NTC3 and trade test certification are preferred.

Qualifications

• Matric / NTC 3 or equivalent required.
• Trade test: Fitter & Turner with Red Seal or equivalent experience.
• Extensive experience in servicing and installation of hydraulic and pneumatic equipment and conveyors.
• Sawmill equipment experience including frame saws, bandsaws, drum chokers/debarkers is essential.
• Welding experience is essential and 15+ years in a sawmilling environment preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform cost-effective mechanical maintenance and repairs on plant and ancillary equipment.
• Install new plant and machinery cost-effectively.
• Record all work on job cards and keep equipment knowledge up to date.
• Maintain high housekeeping and safety standards on site.
• Work overtime and standby duties as required.

Job description

Applicants are required to meet the following criteria:

• Matric / NTC 3. Completed trade test as Fitter and Turner with Red Seal certificate OR Relevant equal skill and experience if not trade tested.


• Strong experience in the servicing and installation of: Hydraulic and pneumatic equipment; Conveyors; Gear boxes; and Belt and chain drives.


• Experienced in Sawmill related equipment: Frame saws, bandsaws and associated equipment; Drum chippers; Debarkers.


• Proven experience as a welder.


• A minimum of 15 years experience in a sawmilling environment with Wetmill experience being an advantage.


• Medically fit with sober habits.


• Code EB license with own transport.


• Willing to work irregular hours and perform standby duties.


• Regularly working overtime, especially on weekends.


• Must be able to communicate in English (speak, read & write).


• Ability to communicate in Xhosa will be an added advantage.

The successful applicant would be responsible for, but not limited to:

• Perform cost-effective mechanical maintenance and repairs on all plant and ancillary equipment in the department.


• Cost-effective installation of new plant and machinery.


• Recording of all work performed on plant and ancillary equipment on a job card.


• Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of all mechanical plant and ancillary equipment on site.


• Maintain a high level of housekeeping and total compliance with safety standards within his work area.


• Performing of overtime work and standby duties as and when required.


• Assisting with on-the-job training of apprentices and semi-skilled artisans working in the engineering division.


• Requisitioning of spares and materials.


• Assist in the formulation and implementation of a planned maintenance program
