Job summary

Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) is seeking a Financial Modelling Specialist in Midrand, South Africa, to build robust models for infrastructure and project-finance transactions and to provide advanced data analysis for feasibility studies and investment decisions.

You will validate assumptions, structure financing solutions, and support internal and external stakeholders with clear modelling outputs and recommendations. This is a permanent, on-site role in Midrand.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Science, Actuarial Science, Finance, Economics, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in financial modelling within project finance, investment banking, infrastructure development, or corporate finance

Responsibilities

  • Build, update, and maintain complex, dynamic financial models for infrastructure and project finance transactions, including scenario, sensitivity, and stress testing
  • Lead the financial modelling component of Bankable Feasibility Studies (BFS), ensuring alignment with project technical, environmental, social, regulatory, and commercial requirements
  • Provide models that support preparation of feasibility assessments, concept studies, pre-feasibility studies, and bankable feasibility studies
  • Review, validate, and challenge technical and operational assumptions used within financial models
  • Assess financial performance indicators and recommend funding structures aligned with development impact and financial sustainability
  • Support preparation of technical and investment documentation for internal decision-making committees and external stakeholders
  • Present financial modelling outputs, results, and recommendations to executives, project sponsors, investors, and partners
  • Participate in negotiations and discussions with sponsors, advisors, lenders, and government entities
  • Prepare investment committee submissions, memos, and model commentary for review by multidisciplinary project teams

About The Role

The Financial Modelling Specialist at DBSA is responsible for building robust financial models and providing advanced data analysis to support infrastructure project development, feasibility assessments, and bankable feasibility studies, validating technical and commercial assumptions, and structuring optimal financing solutions. DBSA (Development Bank of Southern Africa) is a development finance institution mandated to accelerate sustainable socioeconomic development and infrastructure delivery across Southern Africa and the broader continent.

Key responsibilities

Key requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Business Science, Actuarial Science, Finance, Economics, or a related field
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in financial modelling within project finance, investment banking, infrastructure development, or corporate finance
  • Advanced financial modelling capability
  • Strong understanding of project finance structures, capital allocation, cost of capital models, and risk allocation
  • Experience developing or supporting infrastructure or capital-intensive projects
  • Exposure to project feasibility studies, due diligence, and transaction structuring
  • Demonstrated understanding of the project preparation cycle and requirements to prepare bankable projects
Nice to have
  • Post-graduate qualification or honours degree in Finance, Business, Accounting, or Economics
  • Development finance experience
  • Ability to interpret technical, engineering, regulatory, and commercial project data
