Overview

Our client is a dynamic, fast-growing plant hire company managing a fleet of approximately 100 earthmoving and construction machines seeking a commercially minded, hands-on Financial Controller / Finance Manager to take full ownership of their finance office, tighten internal controls, and optimize the financial performance of their fleet asset lifecycle.

Role Overview

This is not a passive "desk only" accounting role. You will run the entire financial function, translating workshop and fleet realities into clean, strategic financial data. Your primary focus will be managing full-function accounting, optimizing asset return on investment (ROI), tracking machine-level costing (diesel, maintenance, and components), and eliminating revenue leakage through robust internal controls.

Key Responsibilities

• Asset Lifecycle & Fleet Commercial Management
  • Produce accurate monthly management accounts, cash flow forecasts, and variance analysis for the executive team.
  • Manage relationship with financial institutions regarding asset finance facilities and fleet scaling debt.
• Financial Reporting & Compliance

  • Implement and enforce strict internal controls around procurement, workshop spares inventory, and field service labour.
  • Oversee diesel and fuel burn reconciliation to eliminate stock variances and theft.
  • Supervise the billing process, ensuring telematics/tracker machine hours match invoicing precisely.

Candidate Requirements

• Professional Qualification: B.Comm accounting/management, SAIPA (Professional Accountant) or CIMA designation.
• Experience: 3+ years of post-article/post-qualification experience; experience in plant hire or logistics is advantageous.
• Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Sage and Excel. Experience integrating fleet management/telematics software with accounting systems is a distinct advantage.
• Attributes: High emotional intelligence, strong assertive communication skills to manage operational/workshop staff, and a forward-looking, predictive mindset regarding cash flow.
