Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Telecommunications Network Engineer in Sandton, Gauteng, to design, deploy, and optimize high-capacity fiber optic networks. You will work on planning, implementation, and performance enhancements in a hybrid role balancing site visits with office work.

The ideal candidate has 4+ years of fiber optics experience, strong knowledge of OTDR, DWDM, GPON/PON, and excellent problem-solving and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Computer Science, or related field.
• Minimum of 4 years of experience in telecommunications network engineering, focusing on fiber optics.
• Experience with fiber optic cable types, connectors, splicing techniques, and testing equipment (OTDR, power meters).
• Familiarity with optical network architectures (PON, GPON, DWDM).
• Proficiency in network design software and documentation tools.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work in a hybrid setting with site visits in Sandton and office design work.
• Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

• Design and plan fiber optic network routes, including cable infrastructure, splicing plans, and equipment placement.
• Oversee the installation and deployment of fiber optic cables, ensuring adherence to industry best practices and standards.
• Perform network testing and commissioning, including OTDR testing, to verify network integrity and performance.
• Troubleshoot and resolve network issues, including fiber breaks, connectivity problems, and performance degradations.
• Manage network documentation, including as-built drawings, inventory, and configuration data.
• Collaborate with project managers, field technicians, and other stakeholders to ensure project milestones are met.
• Conduct site surveys to assess feasibility and identify potential challenges for new deployments in Sandton.
• Stay abreast of new technologies and industry trends in optical networking and telecommunications.
• Ensure network security and performance meet defined service level agreements (SLAs).
• Support network monitoring and maintenance activities, potentially working in an on-call rotation.
