Placements24 is seeking a highly skilled Fiber Network Design Engineer to join a fully remote team. The role focuses on planning, design, and optimization of fiber optic networks to support current and future telecommunications needs, with work allowed from Upington or other remote locations.

You will design routes, perform feasibility studies, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure scalable, reliable, and cost-effective networks.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years in fiber optic network design.
• Proficiency with fiber tech (PON, GPON, DWDM, FTTx).
• Experience with AutoCAD/ArcGIS/OSP-TD.
• Knowledge of OSP construction methods and permitting.

Responsibilities

• Design and engineer fiber routes including access, metro, and long-haul networks.
• Create detailed network designs: conduit routes, splice points, equipment placement.
• Use AutoCAD/ArcGIS/OSP-TD to produce design plans.
• Conduct site feasibility studies and gather data for design.
• Ensure designs comply with standards and company practices.
• Collaborate with construction and project teams to meet timelines.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and engineer new fiber optic network routes, including access, metro, and long-haul networks.
• Develop detailed network designs, including conduit routes, splice points, equipment placement, and fiber counts.
• Utilize specialized network design software (e.g., AutoCAD, ArcGIS, OSP-TD) to create accurate and comprehensive design plans.
• Conduct site feasibility studies and field investigations to gather necessary data for design.
• Ensure network designs comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and company best practices.
• Collaborate with construction, deployment, and project management teams to ensure designs are constructible and meet project timelines.
• Perform cost analysis and provide estimates for materials, labor, and equipment required for fiber network deployment.
• Identify and resolve design conflicts and technical challenges.
• Maintain and update network design documentation, databases, and asset records.
• Stay current with advancements in fiber optic technology and network design methodologies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Civil, Electrical, Telecommunications) or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience specifically in fiber optic network design.
• Proficiency with fiber optic network design principles and technologies (e.g., PON, GPON, DWDM, FTTx).
• Expertise in using network design software such as AutoCAD, ArcGIS, or similar GIS-based tools.
• Strong understanding of outside plant (OSP) construction methods and permitting processes.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple design projects simultaneously in a remote setting.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to interact effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Knowledge of optical testing procedures and equipment is a plus.
• Experience with project cost estimation and budgeting is desirable.
