Qualifications

• Master's degree in Telecommunications Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in telecommunications network design, with 5+ years in fiber optic networks.
• Deep knowledge of optical transmission systems (DWDM/CWDM) and PON technologies.
• Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

About the Role

Our client, a prominent telecommunications provider, is looking for an exceptional Lead Fiber Optic Network Architect to spearhead the design and strategic planning of their extensive fiber optic infrastructure in George, Western Cape . This senior position demands a visionary leader with a deep understanding of fiber optic technologies, network topologies, and deployment strategies. The successful candidate will be instrumental in shaping the future of high-speed data transmission, ensuring scalability, resilience, and cost-effectiveness. This role is critical for driving innovation and maintaining our client's competitive edge in the rapidly evolving telecom landscape. You will work at the forefront of network architecture, defining standards and guiding implementation teams.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and architect comprehensive, long-term strategies for fiber optic network expansion and evolution. Design robust and scalable fiber optic network topologies, considering factors such as capacity, latency, and physical routing. Oversee the selection and integration of fiber optic components, equipment, and technologies from various vendors. Conduct feasibility studies, cost-benefit analyses, and performance modeling for proposed network designs. Collaborate closely with civil engineering, project management, and operations teams to ensure seamless network deployment and lifecycle management. Define technical standards, best practices, and guidelines for fiber optic network construction and maintenance. Provide expert technical consultation and support to internal teams and external partners. Evaluate new technologies and methodologies in the fiber optics domain, recommending adoption where appropriate. Lead and mentor a team of network engineers and designers involved in fiber optic projects.

Requirements

Master's degree in Telecommunications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline. A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in telecommunications network design, with at least 5 years specifically focused on fiber optic networks. In-depth knowledge of optical transmission systems (e.g., DWDM, CWDM), PON technologies, and optical network planning tools. Expertise in optical fiber characteristics, splicing, termination, testing, and troubleshooting techniques. Strong understanding of network architecture principles, IP networking, and transport technologies. Proven experience in leading complex network design projects from conception to completion. Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills. Familiarity with GIS tools and their application in network planning is desirable. Demonstrated ability to innovate and develop creative solutions to challenging network problems.
