Job summary

Placements24 is seeking an experienced Environmental Manager to oversee environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives for mining operations. This fully remote role enables strategic contribution from anywhere in South Africa, with a focus on EMS development, ISO 14001 systems, and stakeholder engagement.

The role requires a degree in environmental science/engineering and 8+ years in mining environmental management.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a dedicated and knowledgeable Environmental Manager to oversee environmental compliance and sustainability initiatives for their diverse mining operations. This fully remote role allows you to contribute strategically from anywhere in South Africa. You will be responsible for developing and implementing environmental management systems, ensuring adherence to all legal requirements, and promoting best practices in environmental stewardship within the mining sector . The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the company's environmental performance and its commitment to responsible resource extraction.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, implement, and maintain the company's Environmental Management System (EMS).
• Ensure compliance with all national and provincial environmental legislation and permitting requirements.
• Conduct environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and develop mitigation strategies for new projects and operations.
• Oversee environmental monitoring programs, including water quality, air emissions, and rehabilitation activities.
• Manage environmental incident investigations and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Engage with regulatory bodies, local communities, and stakeholders on environmental matters.
• Promote environmental awareness and training across all levels of the organization.

Requirements

• Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
• Minimum of 8 years of experience in environmental management, with significant experience in the mining industry .
• In-depth knowledge of South African environmental legislation (NEMA, MPRDA, etc.).
• Proven experience in developing and implementing Environmental Management Plans (EMPs) and ISO 14001 systems.
• Strong understanding of rehabilitation and mine closure principles.
• Excellent communication, reporting, and stakeholder engagement skills.
