Job summary

Network Finance seeks an experienced Electrical Engineer – Power Protection to join its specialist engineering team. The role focuses on power system protection, protection relay design, testing, commissioning, and electrical network studies for HV/MV/LV systems across mining, utilities and industrial projects.

You will develop protection philosophies, perform studies, support FAT/SAT, and coordinate with clients, contractors, and OEMs while ensuring IEC, NRS, Eskom and SANS standards compliance.

Qualifications

  • BEng/BSc/BTech in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional registration with ECSA (Pr Eng or Pr Tech Eng) is advantageous.
  • 5–10 years' experience in electrical power systems and protection engineering.
  • Experience in mining, utilities, industrial plants, renewable energy, or EPC projects is advantageous.
  • Valid driver's licence and willingness to travel to project sites.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop protection schemes for LV, MV, and HV electrical power systems.
  • Perform protection coordination studies and relay setting calculations.
  • Conduct power system analysis: load flow, short circuit, arc flash, motor starting, protection.
  • Prepare protection philosophies, single-line diagrams, schematics, and engineering documentation.
  • Specify protection relays, switchgear, CTs, VTs, and related equipment.
  • Review vendor docs for compliance with project specs and standards.
  • Support FAT, SAT and commissioning activities.
  • Troubleshoot faults and provide technical support during commissioning.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, OEMs and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ensure compliance with IEC, NRS, Eskom, and SANS standards.

Job description

Our client is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer – Power Protection to join its specialist engineering team. This role is ideal for an engineer with expertise in power system protection, protection relay design, testing, commissioning, and electrical network studies. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and performance of medium- and high-voltage electrical systems across industrial, mining, utility, and infrastructure projects.
Working alongside multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will be responsible for developing protection philosophies, performing power system studies, commissioning protection schemes, and providing technical support throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop protection schemes for LV, MV, and HV electrical power systems.
  • Perform protection coordination studies and relay setting calculations.
  • Conduct power system analysis, including:
    • Load flow studies
    • Short circuit studies
    • Arc flash assessments
    • Motor starting studies
    • Protection coordination
  • Prepare protection philosophies, single-line diagrams, schematics, and engineering documentation.
  • Specify protection relays, switchgear, current transformers (CTs), voltage transformers (VTs), and associated equipment.
  • Review vendor documentation and ensure compliance with project specifications and applicable standards.
  • Support factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and commissioning activities.
  • Troubleshoot protection system faults and provide technical support during commissioning and plant operations.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, OEMs, and multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant IEC, NRS, Eskom, and SANS standards.
Minimum Requirements
  • BEng/BSc/BTech in Electrical Engineering.

  • Minimum 5–10 years' experience in electrical power systems and protection engineering.
