Job summary

Bed King is seeking a Depot Manager to be based at King Shaka International Airport. You will oversee safe, efficient, and cost-effective depot operations, ensuring vehicle availability, cleanliness, and compliance with safety standards while driving fleet utilisation and minimising turnaround times.

You will lead depot staff, manage operational risks and costs, and ensure governance and reporting on daily, weekly, and monthly operations to support service excellence and customer satisfaction.

Qualifications

  • BCom qualification or equivalent in Logistics, Operations, Business Management, or related field.
  • Proven fleet management experience including vehicle availability, utilisation, turnaround times, inspections, damages, and maintenance.
  • Ability to lead, develop, and manage depot staff and drive cost efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee day-to-day depot operations, including facilities, security, fuel deliveries, and site functionality.
  • Monitor vehicle utilisation and turnaround times to ensure timely availability and optimal fleet performance.

Job description

As the Depot Manager , you will be responsible for overseeing the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of the vehicle rental depot. You will ensure that vehicles are available, compliant, clean, and in the correct condition for dispatch to branches, while driving optimal fleet utilisation and minimising turnaround and idle times.

The role encompasses the leadership and development of depot staff, management of operational risks and costs, and oversight of all depot activities to ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and legislative requirements. Through effective planning, operational control, and strong leadership, you will play a key role in maintaining high service standards, maximising fleet productivity, and delivering exceptional customer satisfaction.

THE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ROLE ARE:

NON-NEGOTIABLE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A BCom qualification or equivalent in Logistics, Operations, Business Management, or a related field.
  • Proven fleet management experience, including vehicle availability, vehicle movement, utilisation, out-of-service management, turnaround times, inspections, damages, cleanliness, servicing, repairs, and compliance with safety standards.

DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:
1. Operational Management
  • Managing the day-to-day operations of the depot, including facilities and maintenance, security, fuel deliveries, and overall site functionality.
  • Monitoring vehicle utilisation and turnaround times to ensure timely vehicle availability.
  • Maintaining depot efficiency and controlling operational costs.
  • Ensuring an efficient, safe, and visible depot layout and operational flow.
2. Fleet Management
  • Overseeing the allocation, movement, availability, and condition of all vehicles within the fleet.
  • Managing the Out of Service (OOS) fleet in line with agreed targets.
  • Ensuring vehicles are serviced, repaired, and maintained in accordance with safety and compliance standards.
  • Monitoring fleet damage, accidents, and incident reporting processes.
  • Providing fleet support for projects, bulk vehicle supply requirements, and other operational initiatives.
3. Customer Service
  • Ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction and service delivery.
  • Managing and resolving escalated customer complaints promptly and professionally.
  • Monitoring service standards and implementing continuous improvement initiatives where required.
4. Staff Management
  • Supervising, training, coaching, and motivating depot staff, including quality controllers, drivers, cleaners, maintenance personnel, and security staff.
  • Managing staff scheduling, attendance, and performance.
  • Conducting performance reviews and implementing disciplinary procedures where necessary.
  • Promoting a positive, productive, and safety-focused work environment.
  • Monitoring depot expenses and identifying opportunities for cost optimisation.
  • Ensuring accurate vehicle and operational reporting, including maintaining system integrity within TSD.
  • Maintaining governance, controls, and operational processes relating to vehicle deliveries and collections, as well as depot access management.
  • Preparing and submitting daily, weekly, and monthly operational reports as required.
6. Compliance & Risk Management
  • Ensuring compliance with company policies, legal requirements, and health and safety standards.
  • Monitoring adherence to insurance, licensing, and regulatory requirements.
  • Managing risks associated with vehicle theft, damage, fraud, and other operational exposures.
