Job summary

DMA Group is seeking an experienced Commercial Underwriter in Randburg to join our established insurance operation. You will manage high volumes of commercial policies, engage confidently with brokers, and ensure underwriting decisions align with treaty limits and insurer guidelines.

The role requires deep product knowledge, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to accurate, timeous service within a brokerage environment.

Qualifications

• Matric and FAIS compliance with RE5 completed.
• Short-Term Insurance qualification (NQF 4) completed.
• Minimum 5 years commercial underwriting experience in brokerage.
• Must be FAIS compliant, registered as a Representative, and not working under supervision.
• Proven ability to process high volumes of commercial policies accurately.
• Strong knowledge of general and niche commercial products across major insurers.
• Proficient in MS Office, especially Excel for quotes and summaries.
• Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Process new business, amendments, endorsements, and renewals timeously and accurately.
• Check all documentation for completeness and correctness before processing.
• Prepare quotations and apply correct rating according to underwriting guidelines.
• Ensure closings, schedules, and policy documents are filed according to procedure.
• Maintain accurate records and diarise outstanding requirements for follow-up.
• Assess commercial risks across multiple product lines (property, liability, fleet, engineering, niche products, etc.).
• Ensure all risks are written within treaty limits and comply with underwriting mandates.
• Ensure no declined risks are accepted or renewed.
• Maintain strong knowledge of policy wordings, exclusions, endorsements, and insurer product updates.
• Support internal teams and brokers with underwriting queries, ensuring a 24‑hour turnaround time.
• Handle queries from brokers and clients professionally with a 24‑hour response standard.
• Communicate clearly via email, telephone, or other channels.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and clients.
• Provide guidance on cover options, underwriting requirements, and product suitability.
• Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with FAIS, insurer guidelines, and internal procedures.
• Maintain a high standard of accuracy and quality in all documentation.
• Identify gaps or errors and implement corrective actions.
• Comply with all Commercial Treaty arrangements and underwriting protocols.
• Assist with general office administration and operational tasks.
• Contribute to team service standards, productivity, and underwriting excellence.
• Perform any reasonable additional duties requested by management.
• Prepare quotes, comparisons, and policy summaries in Excel.

Desired Experience & Qualification

• Must NOT be debarred with the FSCA
• Minimum 5 years Commercial Underwriting experience within a brokerage environment (non‑negotiable)
• Proven ability to process high volumes of commercial policies accurately
• Strong knowledge of general and niche commercial products across major insurers
• Proficient in MS Office, especially Excel for quotes and summaries
• Excellent communication skills and strong attention to detail
