Job summary

Absa Bank is seeking a Head of Engineering – Commercial Payments in South Africa to lead the end‑to‑end engineering strategy and delivery of enterprise‑wide payment products and platforms.

You will partner with the CIO, product owners and risk functions to translate business priorities into scalable, secure solutions that support revenue growth and merchant experiences across channels, including POS, e-commerce and digital wallets.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology or related field.
• Significant leadership experience in banking/payments or a similarly regulated environment.
• Experience in end-to-end solution architecture, systems integration and platform modernisation.
• Strong knowledge of DevSecOps, CI/CD, automated testing and production engineering.

Responsibilities

• Define and execute the Commercial Payments engineering strategy and roadmap.
• Lead end-to-end design of payment solutions across front-end channels, gateways, switching, and back-end processing.
• Drive security, performance, resilience and cost optimisation of payment platforms.
• Lead Agile delivery, incident management, production readiness and engineering excellence.
