Job summary

Placements24 is seeking a Lead Architect for a distinguished architectural firm in George, Western Cape, to lead heritage restoration and adaptive reuse projects. The role requires steering design teams, coordinating with heritage authorities, and delivering documentation from concept through construction.

You will balance historical accuracy with modern usability, mentor junior staff, and ensure quality and compliance across iconic structures while contributing to the region's cultural heritage.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Architecture with a specialization in Conservation or Heritage Management.
• A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in architectural practice with heritage restoration/adaptive reuse.
• Proven experience leading design teams and managing sensitive projects.
• Expert knowledge of heritage conservation principles, legislation, and best practices.

Responsibilities

• Lead the architectural design process for heritage restoration and modernization projects from assessment to construction documentation.
• Develop design strategies balancing historical accuracy with modern use, safety, and accessibility.
• Manage and mentor a team of architects and designers.
• Liaise with heritage bodies, local authorities, and stakeholders for approvals.
• Prepare detailed specifications, drawings, and reports for tender and construction.
• Oversee materials selection and construction methods sympathetic to heritage fabric.
• Ensure projects meet quality standards and heritage preservation commitments.
• Conduct site inspections to monitor progress and quality of work on heritage elements.
