Flash is a well-established brand and part of Pepkor, with a global strategy and a clear purpose: making people’s lives easier.
We use frontier technology to create opportunities and build products and services that make a real difference in people’s everyday lives.
Our three values are the heartbeat of our business:
- We are all in
- We have each other’s backs
- We are brave
They shape how we work, how we show up for one another and the kind of culture we’re building. A place where people can do meaningful work, feel supported to do their best and have the freedom to make an impact.
If you’re excited by meaningful problems, smart people and building brands and products that improve everyday lives, we’d love to meet you.
Why this role matters
As our Business Solutions Manager, you’ll own and build Flash's tavern/hospitality segment from the ground up, creating an optimal route to market for a fit-for-purpose POS and merchant solutions offering and establishing the commercial engine required to acquire, onboard, support and grow tavern merchants at scale.
You will turn an emerging market opportunity into a functioning, revenue-generating business line by combining customer insight, product development, commercial strategy, partnerships and field operations. The role will also own the segment's commercial performance and P&L contribution as the business scales.
What You’ll Own
- Define and build Flash's tavern and hospitality segment strategy, proposition and commercial model from the ground up.
- Conduct ongoing field research to understand tavern owners, their operating models, customer needs and key business challenges.
- Segment the tavern and hospitality market by factors including formality, location, size and trading model to inform the proposition and go-to-market approach.
- Partner with Product and Hardware teams to develop and refine a POS solution suited to tavern and hospitality operations.
- Identify opportunities to cross-sell Flash's existing digital products and services to drive additional revenue and merchant value.
- Build and execute the segment's go-to-market strategy, including acquisition, onboarding, field support and distribution.
- Develop strategic partnerships with trader associations, brewers, distributors and relevant industry stakeholders.
- Recruit, structure and lead the tavern and hospitality segment team as the business scales.
- Own the segment's P&L contribution, pricing, unit economics and commercial performance.
- Define and report on key segment metrics, including activations, device utilisation, digital product attach rate, retention and revenue.
- Represent the tavern and hospitality segment across Product, Hardware, Compliance, Finance and wider Merchant & SME leadership.
- Monitor relevant licensing, regulatory and enforcement developments and adapt the product and commercial strategy accordingly.
- Regular national travel to trade and trader association sites.
Experience We’re Looking For
- 5 – 8 years' experience in senior commercial, merchant services, hospitality technology, fintech or related roles.
- A relevant BCom or equivalent commercial qualification is preferred.
- Proven experience building a new product, segment or business line from the ground up.
- Proven experience with POS hardware and software, ideally within a retail, hospitality or regulated environment.
- Demonstrated experience owning a P&L or significant commercial budget.
- Experience building and leading field-based commercial teams.
- Experience operating within the South African market.
- Ability to develop and execute a segment strategy, commercial model and go-to-market approach.
- Ability to build business cases, manage unit economics and take accountability for segment financial performance.
- Strong understanding of POS hardware and software within merchant, retail or hospitality environments.
- Experience designing acquisition, onboarding, field support and distribution models.
- Experience establishing and scaling field-based sales and merchant acquisition operations.
- Ability to translate customer needs into product requirements, prioritisation and roadmap decisions.
- Experience establishing commercial partnerships that support customer acquisition, distribution or market access.
- Ability to define and monitor commercial metrics including activations, utilisation, retention and revenue.
Bonus points if you have…
- Direct exposure to the South African township, informal or on-consumption liquor retail environment.
- Experience with POS or technology solutions within liquor, hospitality or on-consumption environments.
- Experience serving township, informal retail or cash-based merchant segments.
You’ll thrive in the Herd if you have…
- Entrepreneurial mindset: Builds new opportunities from the ground up and is comfortable creating structure where none exists.
- Commercial judgement: Balances customer needs, commercial viability, scalability and compliance when making decisions.
- Customer centricity: Uses direct engagement with merchants to understand their operating realities and translate insights into practical solutions.
- Stakeholder management: Builds effective relationships across merchants, industry bodies, suppliers, internal teams and executive leadership.

- Accountability: Takes ownership for outcomes and follows through from strategy and planning to execution and measurable results.
- Collaboration: Works effectively across product, hardware, operations, finance, compliance and commercial teams to deliver shared outcomes.
- Influence: Creates trust and alignment across diverse stakeholder groups and uses strong relationships to accelerate adoption and growth.
