Job summary

EdUpStairs in Pretoria, South Africa is seeking a Boiler Operator with solid knowledge of boiler operation and safety protocols to join our maintenance team.

The role involves monitoring pressures, ensuring water and fuel levels, handling chemicals, and keeping the boiler room compliant with occupational health and safety standards. Candidates should have Grade 10 or higher, a steam certificate, and at least one year of relevant experience; strong communication and planning skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Grade 10 with steam certificate is required.

Responsibilities

• Ensure correct usage and flow of chemicals; request chemicals from stores as required.
• Test water quality of softeners and condensate water returns.
• Fill chemical tank with prescribed chemicals and top up salt in brine tank.
• Check operating condition of chemical pumps and test TDS and blow-down as prescribed.
• Monitor boiler pressure and steam pressure; maintain correct temperature of hot well pumps.
• Adjust the stoker for efficient steam delivery and report defects immediately.
• Monitor water/fuel levels and feed water pumps; ensure standby boilers are water-filled.
• Control fuel flow and ensure adherence to Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Duties

• Ensure correct usage and flow of chemicals-Request chemicals from stores as required.
• Test quality of water of softeners as well the returning flows of condensate water.
• Fill chemical tank with required chemicals as prescribed.
• Top up salt in brine tank.
• Check working conditions of chemical pumps.
• Test total dissolve solids (TDS) and blow-down according to prescripts.
• Monitoring boiler pressure in accordance with demand Monitor the steam pressure constantly.
• Check the correct temperature of hot well pumps.
• Adjust the stoker for efficient steam delivery.
• Report all defects immediately.
• Monitoring the water/fuel level in the boiler-Check the feed water pumps-level and hot well
• tanks for sufficient water supply to the boiler.
• Make sure that standby boilers and funnel is full of water and chemical at all times.
• Control the flow of fuel.
• Ensure adherence and compliance with occupational and heath standards and the occupational health and safety act.
• Ensure that the boiler environment is well maintained.
• To ensure the removal ash from boilers, grit arrester and smoke box.
