Job summary

Metso is hiring a Field Service Technician – BMH Equipment in Cape Town to install, commission, maintain, and repair bulk material handling equipment, maximizing uptime and safety.

You will report to the Field Service Manager – Bulk Hub, Southern Africa and collaborate with customers, suppliers and site personnel to deliver high-quality field service and optimize equipment performance. Travel locally and internationally may be required.

Qualifications

  • Matric (Grade 12).
  • Mechanical, Electrical, or Millwright Trade Certificate.
  • Strong experience with bulk material handling equipment, including stacker reclaimers, wagon tipplers, conveyors, apron feeders, and ship loaders.
  • Solid experience with electrical control systems, instrumentation, Siemens PLCs, HMI systems, SCADA platforms, motor control centers, variable speed drives, sensors, and industrial automation systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in commissioning, shutdowns, fault finding, maintenance, and troubleshooting within mining, port, or industrial environments.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, electrical schematics, control drawings, instrumentation diagrams, manuals, and OEM documentation.
  • Knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act, construction safety requirements, hazard identification, inspections, audits, and legal compliance obligations.
  • Strong technical background in bulk material handling equipment, hydraulics, pneumatics, gearboxes, slew systems, and rail systems.
  • Strong leadership, communication, customer relationship, planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Valid passport.
  • Ability to work under pressure, travel locally and internationally, and work extended hours, shifts, weekends, and shutdown periods when required.
  • Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in harsh outdoor and industrial environments.
  • Medically fit to perform site-specific duties.
  • OEM training on bulk material handling equipment would be beneficial

Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair stacker reclaimers, apron feeders, wagon tipplers, and related bulk material handling equipment.
  • Diagnose and rectify electrical, instrumentation, PLC, SCADA, hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical faults while supporting automation upgrades and system improvements.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance activities, including shutdowns, overhauls, component replacements, recommissioning, calibration, and functional testing.
  • Conduct equipment audits, inspections, hazard assessments, risk reviews, and safety activities to ensure compliance with mining, construction, and site-specific safety requirements.
  • Lead and mentor technicians and artisans on site, supervise contractors, and act as a technical authority during breakdowns and critical interventions.
  • Support maintenance planning, scheduling, spare parts recommendations, fault analysis, root cause investigations, and technical reporting.
  • Liaise with customers, operations, engineering teams, suppliers, and other stakeholders to minimize downtime and improve equipment reliability.
  • Promote a strong safety culture, participate in safety reviews and meetings, and ensure safe work practices are followed at all times.

We're looking for a Field Service Technician – BMH Equipment to join our Field Services Team.

In this role, you'll be responsible for providing technical support, maintenance, commissioning, troubleshooting, and repair services for bulk material handling equipment while supporting safe and reliable customer operations. Your work will play a key part in maximizing equipment performance, minimizing downtime, and delivering excellent customer service.

You will join the Field Services Team, working closely with management, Metso employees, suppliers, subcontractors, customers, and site personnel. What You'll Do
