  • Knowledge of teaching techniques for Foundation Phase English Home Language and English Additional Language.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver English Home Language Literacy and English Additional Language modules at a Foundation Phase level.
  • Design curriculum, instructional materials, and assessment strategies to promote active learning.
  • Conduct research regarding English language teaching or related fields, leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.
  • Participate in academic administration, including serving on faculty committees, contributing to curriculum development, and assisting with accreditation processes.
  • Engage in professional development activities to stay abreast of advancements in English language teaching, educational pedagogy, and research methodologies.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the department and across disciplines to promote interdisciplinary research and educational initiatives.
  • Represent the department and the faculty at academic conferences, workshops, and public events.
  • Contribute to community outreach programs and initiatives that promote the use of English language in local and regional communities.

CORE PURPOSE OF JOB

The Faculty of Education at Nelson Mandela University invites applications for an Associate Lecturer position in English Home Language Literacy and English as an Additional Language. The successful candidate will contribute to the academic excellence of the faculty by teaching Foundation Phase students. The Associate Lecturer will also engage in research activities, participate in the administration and development of educational programs within the Primary School Education Department.

The incumbent will be required to:
  • Develop and deliver English Home Language Literacy and English Additional Language modules at a Foundation Phase level.
  • Design course curriculum, instructional materials, and assessment strategies that promote active learning and student engagement.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
  • Facilitate learning, teaching, and assessment at undergraduate level.
  • Conduct research and publish in peer-reviewed academic journals / academic platforms.
  • Participate in academic and community engagements.
  • Contribute to Faculty administration as required.
CORE COMPETENCIES
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge and expertise in Foundation Phase English Home Language Literacy and English Additional Language trends, theories, methodologies and approaches.
  • Ability to facilitate teaching, learning and assessment of English-related content to diverse cohorts of undergraduate students.
  • Ability to develop curricula and teaching resources for the Method of English Home Language and English Additional Language offered in the Primary School Education Department.
  • Proficiently navigate and utilise the Moodle Learning Management Systems (LMS) to facilitate effective online teaching and learning experiences. This includes showing expertise in managing course materials, assignments, and assessments within the LMS platform, as well as providing technical support to students and colleagues. Additionally, demonstrate proficiency in customising and optimising the LMS interface to enhance user experience and engagement.
  • Conduct scholarly work with a focus on teaching English Home Language Literacy and English Additional Language in the Foundation phase.
  • Possess effective communication skills (verbal and written), good facilitation, training, and presentation skills.
REQUIREMENTS
  • At least an Honours degree in Education or English. A Masters in Education or English will be an added advantage.
  • An undergraduate qualification in Foundation Phase Education
  • At least two-years’ experience in teaching Foundation Phase English Home Language Literacy and or English Additional Language in the school @context.
  • Experience in teaching in a Higher Education @context.
  • Sound disciplinary and content knowledge of English Home Language Literacy and English Additional Language.
  • Sound knowledge of various techniques for teaching English Home Language Literacy and English Additional Language.
