Job summary

SGS seeks an analytical laboratory professional in Gauteng to log samples in SLIMS, perform analyses with proper procedures, and print/label samples with precision. The role includes reporting results on time and adhering to ISO17025 and SGS QHSE standards.

You'll operate lab instruments, maintain equipment, and support audits and training while ensuring housekeeping and safety in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • BSc, BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • Alternatively, relevant laboratory knowledge/experience recognized via RPL.
  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science.

Responsibilities

  • Log received samples into the SLIMS using client work orders.
  • Analyze analytical samples using the correct procedures and/or methods.
  • Print sample labels and ensure accurate sorting before labeling and boxing.
  • Report results within the specified time frame.
  • Adhere to quality, health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Operate laboratory instrumentation and record maintenance/calibration activities.
  • Record day-to-day repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments.
  • Comply with SGS QHSE policies and assist with audits where required.
  • Maintain good housekeeping and support training as needed.

Overview
  • Responsibility to log received samples into the SLIMS using work orders from the client.
  • Responsibility of analyzing all analytical samples using the correct procedures and/or methods.
  • Responsibility to print sample labels.
  • Responsibilities to ensure samples are sorted correctly before labeling and boxing the samples.
  • Responsibility to report results within the time frame specified.
  • Responsibility to follow all quality directives of this Department.
  • Responsible for operation of laboratory instrumentation
  • Responsibility to bring all problems (technical and managerial) to the attention of the Chemist.
  • Responsibility to adhere to all quality, health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Responsibility to ensure that the housekeeping in the receiving /working areas are in order.
  • Complies and conforms to Laboratory Quality Management System (ISO17025).
  • Must be able to help with the preparation of SANAS audits
  • Responsibility to record any day-to-day repairs, maintenance, calibration and verification of instruments.
  • All analytical data and calculations shall be made traceable and stored in the relevant files for that purpose or LIMS.
  • Responsibility to work in other areas and/or Divisions if asked to do so.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system
  • Follow Supervisors clear detailed instructions and demonstrate flexibility in executing duties.
  • Perform any other reasonable tasks as assigned by direct line manager.
  • Shall adhere to all Health, Safety and Environmental requirements of the SGS OI Management System, country legislation, Rules for Life, local legal requirements and laws.
  • Shall comply and conform to the QHSE, Global and country policies of SGS.
  • Participate and form part of Operational Integrity projects and campaigns.
  • Shall report Health, Safety and Environmental hazards, incidents/accidents and near misses to the Supervisor/SHE Representative/Location Manager/OI Site Coordinator.
  • Apply Check status process and use the Stop Work Authority whenever the control of risks is not clearly established and understood.
  • Observe and report any faulty/nonfunctioning apparatus or equipment and or deviations from process/protocols/procedures/work instructions, to the Supervisor/Location Manager.
  • Assist in investigations.
  • Ensure that all proper procedures/Working instructions, etc. are followed.
  • Assist with training of employee/s where required.
  • Perform and ensure good housekeeping practices are maintained in all work areas at all times.
  • Participate and adhere to all HSE Procedures/Working instructions, Integrity, Safe Talks, Toolbox talks, etc. training.
  • Assist in the monthly stock counts within the department
Qualifications
  • BSc, BTech or National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
  • Alternatively, relevant laboratory knowledge, skills and experience sufficient to be recognised as a qualification through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
  • Grade 12 / Matric with Mathematics and Science as subjects.
Eligibility & Requirements
  • Must be a South African citizen and able to provide a valid South African ID.
  • Must be between 18 and 33 years of age.
  • Must currently be unemployed.
  • Must have no criminal record.
  • Locations, applicable: Randfontein, Orkney, Barberton, Brits, Kathu, Mokopane, Rustenburg , Richards Bay.
  • Must demonstrate a willingness to learn and develop practical laboratory experience.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a structured laboratory environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills.
  • Good problem-solving skills, with the ability to apply a logical and structured approach.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement and take ownership of assigned responsibilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with good listening and interpersonal abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with different stakeholders and contribute positively within a team.
  • Strong understanding of laboratory safety and data integrity.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and maintain accuracy in a fast-paced working environment.
  • High level of professionalism, integrity and commitment.
