Qualifications

Job description

Our client is looking for an expert Agronomist to provide scientific guidance and technical support for crop production in the Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape region. This role is critical for optimizing crop yields, improving soil health, and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices. You will work closely with farmers and farm managers, conducting field assessments, developing crop management plans, and advising on the best use of fertilizers, pesticides, and irrigation. This position offers a blend of field work and office-based analysis, contributing directly to the success of local agriculture.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct detailed soil and crop health assessments to diagnose issues and recommend appropriate solutions.
  • Develop tailored crop management plans , including recommendations for planting, fertilization, pest control, and irrigation strategies.
  • Advise farmers and farm managers on the selection of appropriate seed varieties and agricultural inputs.
  • Monitor crop development throughout the growing season, providing ongoing support and adjustments to management plans.
  • Stay abreast of the latest research and advancements in agronomy, crop science, and sustainable farming practices.
  • Educate farmers on best practices for soil conservation, water management, and integrated pest management (IPM) in the Port Elizabeth area.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Soil Science, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience as an Agronomist or in a similar agricultural advisory role.
  • Strong understanding of crop physiology, soil science, and integrated pest management.
  • Experience with data analysis and interpretation related to crop performance and soil health.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills to effectively advise clients.
  • Willingness to travel regularly within the region and occasionally to remote farm locations.
