Relay EMS in Mossel Bay is seeking an Advanced Life Support (ECP) professional to provide advanced pre-hospital care within HPCSA scope. You will make independent clinical decisions and lead on-scene teams. The role requires HPCSA registration, a Code 8/10 license with PrDP, BLS, ACLS advantageous, excellent communication, teamwork, and ability to work under pressure. Fluency in English is essential; additional languages are a plus.

Qualifications

Job Title: Advanced Life Support (ECP)

Job Specification

1. Registration with the HPCSA as an Emergency Care Practitioner (ECP)

2. Must have a valid Code 8 or 10 driver’s license, and PrDP, non-negotiable.

3. Must have matric certificate or equivalent qualification.

4. Experience in Emergency Medical Services as BLS, ILS or operational ALS.

5. Proven ability to drive and operate an emergency vehicle safely

6. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare provers

7. Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS) will be advantageous).

8. Advanced Driving course or defensive driving course will be advantageous.

9. Sound clinical knowledge and knowledge of evidence-based practice of medicine.

10. Ability to work effectively in a team.

11. Ability to perform under high pressure situations.

12. Fluent in English. Any additional languages will be advantageous.

13. Excellent communication skills with colleagues, hospital staff and Doctors.

14. Flexibility to adapt and cope with changes at short notice.

15. Strong administration skills with attention to detail

Job Description

To provide advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care within the full scope of practice as prescribed by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). The ECP is responsible for independent clinical decision-making, leadership in emergency situations, and contributing to clinical governance and quality assurance within the organisation.

Key Performance Areas:

1. Clinical Responsibilities

  • Deliver independent advanced life support care
  • Perform advanced airway management, cardiac interventions, and pharmacological treatments
  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments and determine appropriate clinical interventions
  • Function autonomously in line with HPCSA protocols and organisational clinical guidelines
  • Ensure safe patient care in compliance within HPCSA protocols as an ALS practitioner.
  • Assessing health status of persons involved in accidents, natural disasters, and other emergency situations to ensure appropriate treatment and standards of care are provided.
  • Monitoring changes in the health status of patients during transport to and from medical, rehabilitation and other health care facilities.
  • Practice of strict infection control measures and maintaining a safe, healthy, and accident-free workplace.
  • Active participation in continuous development activities aimed at improving and updating clinical and industry related knowledge.
  • Compliance with Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines published by HPCSA and facilitation of internal CME’s from time to time.
  • Facilitate efficient scene flow, optimal scene time and patient journeys by managing patient care scenarios across all care levels.
  • Facilitate the efficient and effective management of emergency medical and trauma calls as per HPCSA and company standards, policies, and procedures.

2. Emergency Response & Operations

  • Responding timeously, efficiently and professionally to all emergency calls.
  • Responsible driving of emergency vehicles in accordance with company policy and National Road Traffic Act.
  • Safe operating of company vehicles and equipment as per company policies and procedures.
  • The Employee is required to demonstrate the ability to competently and safely operate an emergency ambulance vehicle under both normal and emergency conditions.
  • The possession of a valid driver’s licence and Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) does not in itself constitute competence to operate an emergency vehicle.
  • The Employee must successfully complete any practical driving assessment, evaluation, or competency testing as determined by the Company;
  • The Employee must demonstrate the ability to:
  • Safely operate the ambulance in emergency response conditions;
  • Navigate while conveying patients with due consideration to patient safety and clinical condition;
  • Comply with all road traffic legislation and emergency driving protocols;

3. Clinical Governance and Quality Assurance

  • Accurate completion and administration of all required patient and company documentation.
  • Complete accurate and comprehensive Patient Report Forms (PRFs).
  • Ensure compliance with clinical audit requirements and AI-assisted PRF validation systems
  • Participate in morbidity and mortality reviews, case discussions, and CPD

4. Equipment and Asset Management

  • Ensure all medical equipment is functional and compliant
  • Maintain drug control according to legal requirements
  • Facilitate the procurement of specialized consumable stock and/or equipment to maintain adequate stock levels.

5. Leadership and Supervision

  • Lead on-scene emergency care teams
  • Provide clinical guidance and informal supervision to junior staff (ECA/AEA, BLS)
  • Mentor students and newly qualified practitioners where applicable.
  • Be able to inspire, motivate, develop, mentor, coach and lead other staff to ensure efficient clinical and professional emergency medical care.
