Description

Who is USP?

The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) is an independent scientific organization that collaborates with the world’s leading health and science experts to develop rigorous quality standards for medicines, dietary supplements, and food ingredients. At USP, we believe that scientific excellence is driven by a commitment to fairness, integrity, and global collaboration. This belief is embedded in our core value of Passion for Quality and is demonstrated through the contributions of more than 1,300 professionals across twenty global locations, working to strengthen the supply of safe, high-quality medicines worldwide.

At USP, we value inclusive scientific collaboration and recognize that attracting diverse expertise strengthens our ability to develop trusted public health standards. We foster an organizational culture that supports equitable access to mentorship, professional development, and leadership opportunities. Our partnerships, standards, and research reflect our belief that ensuring broad participation in scientific leadership results in stronger, more impactful outcomes for global health.

USP is proud to be an equal employment opportunity employer (EEOE) and is committed to ensuring fair, merit-based selection processes that enable the best scientific minds—regardless of background—to contribute to advancing public health solutions worldwide. We provide reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities and uphold policies that create an inclusive and collaborative work environment.

Brief Job Overview

The pharmaceutical industry is undergoing a transformation driven by rapid acceleration of scientific knowledge, advanced manufacturing technologies, emerging analytical testing methods, digital innovations, and the urgent need for supply chain resilience. These forces are reshaping how medicines are developed, manufactured, and delivered domestically and internationally.

USP’s Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) program is at the forefront of this change, helping the industry make drugs in new ways, test drugs in new ways, and build competitive, secure supply chains. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in converting USP’s scientific and technical expertise into market-ready solutions that accelerate technology adoption, improve medicine quality, and strengthen domestic health security. Your work will directly support USP’s 2030 commitments to expand access to quality medicines through US biopharmaceutical manufacturing, advance digital technologies, and foster sustainability. You will drive innovative, scalable solutions so patients everywhere have reliable access to trusted medicines.

How will YOU create impact here at USP?

As part of our mission to advance scientific rigor and public health standards, you will play a vital role in increasing global access to high-quality medicines through public standards and related programs. USP prioritizes scientific integrity, regulatory excellence, and evidence-based decision-making to ensure health systems worldwide can rely on strong, tested, and globally relevant quality standards.

Additionally, USP’s People and Culture division, in partnership with the Equity Office, invests in leadership and workforce development to equip all employees with the skills to create high-performing, inclusive teams. This includes training in equitable management practices and tools to promote engaged, collaborative, and results-driven work environments.

This position leads the development, launch, and lifecycle management of USP’s advanced manufacturing products and services portfolio. This role bridges technical expertise and business strategy, ensuring offerings align with USP’s mission and meet the needs of customers across government, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and donor-funded public health sectors. While this role spans the breadth of AMT’s technical areas, the position will also be the technical expert in biologics and biopharmaceuticals.

The Product & Market Development Director has the following responsibilities:

  • Define and execute the roadmap for AMT products and services (e.g., biologics technical services, materials portfolio, spectroscopy sensors, AI/ML-enhanced services) in close collaboration with AMT team and other groups at USP.
  • Drive revenue growth for AMT product lines and services.
  • Lead technical proposal development for US government opportunities of both bespoke and standardized service offerings, especially in the biopharmaceutical space.
  • Define, develop, launch, and manage the physical materials portfolio to support companies using advanced pharmaceutical and biologics manufacturing with close coordination with USP materials program and relevant program unit teams.
  • Gather, analyze, and continuously update customer insights to inform product development and ensure offerings address real-world challenges in manufacturing and testing.
  • Identify and prioritize market opportunities across pharma, biotech, and government sectors.
  • Translate AMT’s strategic priorities into market-ready offerings.
  • Oversee stage-gate processes for product and service development.
  • Manage lifecycle from concept through launch and post-market optimization while collaborating with AMT technical, GHMS external communications, and GHMS federal practice teams.
  • Develop go-to-market strategies, pricing models, and commercialization plans for new offerings and recommend positioning strategies for existing offerings to the market opportunities.
  • Work closely with GHMS business development and federal practice teams to identify and cultivate strategic alliances and partnerships with industry, technology innovators, academia, and government agencies to accelerate adoption of advanced technologies and build sustainable US-based pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Monitor KPIs related to adoption, customer satisfaction, and contribution to USP’s 2030 commitments (e.g., digital transformation, supply chain resilience, sustainability).
  • Other duties and projects assigned.

Who is USP Looking For?

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of our mission, commitment to excellence through inclusive and equitable behaviors and practices, ability to quickly build credibility with stakeholders, along with the following competencies and experience:

  • Advanced degree in biology, biotechnology, chemistry, or related field.
  • MBA or equivalent business experience with demonstrated business acumen.
  • 7 years (Sr. Manager) to 10 years (Director) leading product strategy, commercialization, and market development in the life science business-to-business or government solutions spaces.
  • 3 years participating in (Sr. Manager) or leading (Director) technical proposal development for US government funding opportunities.
  • Desire to affect change and drive public health impact.
  • Willingness to travel 20% as needed domestically and internationally on occasion.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may substitute.

Additional Desired Preferences

  • Demonstrated ability to explore emerging technologies and market trends, asking the right questions to uncover unmet needs and unexpected solutions.
  • Proven track record of rapid decision-making and prioritization in dynamic environments.
  • Willingness to experiment with new ideas, pilot solutions, and pivot quickly based on feedback.
  • Familiarity with federal procurement processes, grant funding, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory science, supply chain dynamics, and/or emerging technologies (e.g., continuous manufacturing, biosynthesis, etc.).
  • Comfort with representing USP in external forums, conferences, and policy discussions.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional initiative teams without direct management authority.
  • Experience managing a portfolio of both products and services.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None, this is an individual contributor role. However, it is possible that supervisory responsibilities will be added in the future.

USP provides the benefits to protect yourself and your family today and tomorrow. From company-paid time off and comprehensive healthcare options to retirement savings, you can have peace of mind that your personal and financial well-being is protected.

Compensation

Base Salary Range: USD $153,500.00 – $203,250.00 annually.
