Job summary

Hillsdale College is seeking a Maintenance Technician to support the Physical Plant with HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and structural system maintenance. The role requires inspecting equipment, performing repairs, and adhering to safety practices across campus buildings.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma, two years of maintenance experience, and a valid driver’s license. Pool operator certification must be completed within two years of employment.

Qualifications

• Requires a high school diploma and two years of experience in minor construction or maintenance repair.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Within two years of employment, must complete a certified pool operator class to be certified with the National Swimming Pool Foundation.

Responsibilities

• Inspect periodically and/or as scheduled, repair and/or replace any in-house equipment or system as required.
• Maintain heating and air conditioning systems in all buildings including boilers cooling towers and related equipment daily.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair electrical equipment and distribution systems as scheduled.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain water and sewer distribution systems.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain structural-related systems.
• Assist Operations Director and other maintenance personnel as directed.
• Perform routine maintenance and upkeep on Maintenance Department equipment and tools.
• Adhere to safety standards and report incidents promptly.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Job description

Summary We are seeking candidates for the following shifts:

• 2nd (3pm-11:30pm)
• 3rd (11pm-7:30am)

Candidates will train on 1st (7am-3:30pm) shift for approxiately 6-8 weeks.

Perform general maintenance activities in designated areas, including periodic and scheduled inspections, preventive maintenance, and repair of any or all in-house systems.

Essential Job Functions

• Inspect periodically and/or as scheduled, repair and/or replace any in-house equipment or system as required.
• Maintain heating and air conditioning systems in all buildings including the testing and treatment of boilers cooling towers, and related equipment daily.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair periodically or as scheduled all electrical-related equipment and distribution systems.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain as scheduled, the water and sewer distribution system.
• Inspect, repair, and maintain structural-related systems.
• Assist other maintenance personnel or others within the Physical Plant Department at the direction of the Director of Operations for Facilities & Capital Projects.
• Perform routine maintenance and upkeep on Maintenance Department equipment and tools.
• Adhere to all safety standards and work practices established by the Physical Plant, including timely reporting of incidents if any.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience

• Requires a high school diploma and two (2) years of experience in minor construction or maintenance repair work or any combination of education, training, or experience, that fulfills the needs of the College.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Within two years of employment, must complete a certified pool operator class to be certified with the National Swimming Pool Foundation.

Other Skills

• Ability to operate hand tools, and vehicles common to the trade.
• Ability to perform repairs requiring a basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing, heating, cooling, locksmith, and general mechanical work.
• Ability to perform work in welding, brazing, heating, cutting, and shaping metal through the use of acetylene and electric arc welding equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, and manufacturer’s specifications.
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, and to take instruction from either.
• Must be willing to seek training to enhance or learn new skills.
• Must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies, or when needed to meet the ongoing mission of the College.
• Ability to maintain an acceptable attendance record, punctual, and meet deadlines.

Physical Demands

• Must be able to ascend and descend ladders, scaffolds, and stairs and work from heights.
• Ability to perform strenuous activity and lifting or moving of large and bulky items.
