Job summary

Chicanos Por La Causa, Inc. (CPLC) in Espanola, NM is seeking a full-time YouthBuild instructor to train trainees in carpentry and related construction skills, while supporting counseling and leadership development.

You will promote safety, teamwork, and community service involvement, helping participants gain practical experience and advance toward education and workforce goals.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in project planning, management, or administration in a community-based setting.
  • Must obtain an active Driver’s License and ability to travel locally.
  • Must be OSHA 500 Certified or willing to obtain certification once employed.
  • Must be willing to attain construction certification to certify participants in NCCER or equivalent.
  • Strong commitment to youth leadership and ability to work with young people.
  • Experience in negotiating and working with community orgs and public agencies.
  • Excellent oral and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Teach YouthBuild trainees carpentry skills: demolition, rough framing, drywall, finish carpentry.
  • Assist in counseling and development of trainees’ leadership skills with YouthBuild staff.
  • Promote teamwork and participation across staff levels.
  • Ensure work-site safety and proper construction techniques.
  • Participate in community service projects.

Job description

Lay the foundation for a new generation of builders!

The CPLC YouthBuild program is designed to provide at-risk youth aged 17 to 24 with the opportunity to earn their high school diploma or GED, receive job training, and gain valuable work experience - all at no cost. This program seeks to improve workforce development opportunities for young people. YouthBuild helps participants build leadership skills, engage in community service, and develop career pathways that lead to long-term success in the labor market. The program focuses on construction and other hands-on skills training, as participants work on building affordable housing in their communities.

This is an in office position working out of the office in Espanola.
HOW WILL YOU MAKE AN IMPACT IN THIS ROLE?
  • You will teach YouthBuild trainees carpentry skills including demolition, rough framing, drywall, and finish carpentry.
  • You will assist in personal and vocational counseling and development of trainees’ leadership skills in conjunction with other YouthBuild staff.
  • Your management style will promote teamwork and participation by staff at all levels.
  • You will ensure work-site safety, learning of safety procedures, and proper construction techniques.
  • You will participate in community service projects.

  • You are patient and empathetic: You have the ability to remain patient with trainees and understand their challenges to create a supportive learning environment.
  • You are a strong leader and motivator capable of inspiring and motivating trainees to learn and grow.
  • You have an attention to detail which is important for ensuring accuracy in training and for identifying and correcting potential mistakes early.
  • You are flexible and have a willingness to adapt plans and find solutions when faced with unexpected changes or problems.
Minimum Qualifications And Competencies
Education /Background:
  • High school diploma or GED required
