Job summary

Position Summary:

The purpose of this position is to perform professional recreation work involving planning, organizing, implementing, and managing city activities, events, and programs for youth and teens. Exercises considerable initiative and judgment under the general supervision of the Recreation Manager.

Position Scope:

This is not intended as a comprehensive list; it is intended to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities. Incumbent may be required to perform all duties listed, and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

• Plans, implements, supervises, and evaluates youth and teen activities, events, and programs; Recommends changes to current programs based on community interest or needs; Meets with individuals or groups to stimulate interest and support for youth and teen activities; Promotes programs and special events in accordance to the mission of the City and department.
• Plans, implements, and evaluates Summer Camp programs for the City. This includes hiring and training staff, organizing field trips and on-site activities, and ensuring accurate reports.
• Performs supervisory duties to include directing, recruiting, training and evaluating contractors, employees, and teen volunteers; Prepares and maintains accurate records of hours worked by teen volunteers; Enforces City and department policies, regulations, rules and standards.
• Inventories and purchases all programmatic equipment and supplies within budget; performs cost control activities to ensure effective and efficient use of funds, personnel, materials, facilities, and time; monitors revenues and expenditures in assigned area to assure sound fiscal control; prepares annual budget requests. Seeks community partnerships or sponsorships for programs and special events.
• Manages and supervises assigned operations to achieve goals; plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments, ensures compliance and licensing with related outside agencies. Communicates official plans, policies and procedures to staff.
• Prepares a variety of studies, reports and related information for decision-making purposes, to include attendance, accident, and accounting reports.
• Responds to public inquiries, promotes interest and provides information regarding youth and teen programs to other recreation officials, community service groups, other departments, and the general public.
• Works closely with the City's Media division for promotion of youth and teen programs/events.
• Demonstrates superior customer service and commitment to quality. Effectively communicates with participants whether in-person, by telephone, or via email. Actively resolves conflict and/or customer complaints in a timely manner. Problem solves and makes programmatic adjustments extemporaneously.
• Coordinates with staff, other City Departments, non-City agencies, private organizations and contractors to identify, study and develop solutions responsive to problems affecting teens. Develops short and long range plans; gathers, interprets, and prepares data for studies, reports and recommendations.
• Prepares and maintains accounts payable/receivable records for youth and teen programs. Prepares and checks forms, records and applications for accuracy and completeness. Maintains related files.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

• Considerable knowledge of recreation philosophy, planning and administration; Considerable knowledge of the equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program specifically in youth and teen programming.
• Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in recreation programs, specifically youth and teen programming; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public; Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; Ability to plan and supervise the work of volunteers.

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in recreation or a closely related field preferred supplemented by three (3) years recreation experience, to include community center, summer camp or youth and/or teen programming management.
• Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

• Valid Florida Driver's License.
• American Red Cross Adult & Pediatric First Aid & CPR certification must be obtained within sixty (60) days of employment.
• Certified Parks & Recreation Professional (CPRP) preferred.
• Department of Children and Families Childcare Director credential required.
