JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, supervise Recreation Center programs and activities. In the absence of the Recreation Center Manager, manage the Recreation Center. Plan, coordinate, and supervise the activities and staff of the summer day camp program. Assist the Recreation Center Manager in supervising part-time employees. Prepare and track camp programming needs and maintain the camp budget, ensuring adherence to financial guidelines and objectives. Assist with front desk coverage as needed. Support departmental events, including recreation, community, and adaptive events. Perform other related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise summer day camp employees and attendees.
- Hire, train, and supervise seasonal summer camp Directors and Counselors.
- Coordinate the work of recreation staff employees for summer camps.
- Design, develop, supervise, and evaluate recreation programs, events, and activities.
- Supervise large groups of participants and staff across multiple sites to ensure health and safety standards are maintained and programs are conducted orderly.
- Publicize, market, and evaluate programs, activities, summer day camps, and events.
- In the absence of the Recreation Center Manager, manage the Recreation Center.
- Supervise class programs and instructors.
- Conduct, assist, and/or supervise continuous programs at various Recreation Center locations.
- Supervise and assign tasks to part-time employees as appropriate.
- Interview and hire part-time employees. Supervise activities and ensure the safety of the facility.
- Work a weekly evening facility shift and weekends for summer camps and special events as necessary.
- Maintain accurate records.
- Collect class or other fees, adhering to City accounting practices.
- Maintain supplies and inventory at acceptable levels; follow City purchasing and budget procedures.
- Promote and maintain good public relations and provide excellent customer service.
- Communicate courteously and effectively with city employees, officials, patrons, and the public.
- Participate physically in various recreational activities.
- Facilitate and guide a group of community youth members in developing and implementing teen recreation programming.
- Assist with departmental events, including recreation, community, and adaptive events.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS AND PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES:
- Assist with front desk coverage as needed.
- Carry, push, pull, drag, and/or hold objects up to 50 pounds, such as equipment or furniture, if required.
- Perform minor facility maintenance chores as needed.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, DEGREES, CERTIFICATES AND/OR LICENSES:
Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration or a related field is required. A combination of relevant education and work experience equivalency may be considered. A Texas Class C driver’s license is required.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, KNOWLEDGE, AND SKILLS:
- Two (2) years of experience in the field of recreation is required; experience coordinating summer day camps is preferred.
- Previous experience working with children preferred.
- Experience coordinating recreation events for diverse populations, including individuals with special needs, is preferred.
- Computer literacy, with required experience using word processing and database software.
- Experience in organizing, supervising, and promoting recreation programs. Experience using computerized class registration software programs is highly desirable.
- Ability to maintain mental focus during work and make quick, effective decisions.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Supervisory and management skills.
- Ability to operate continuous recreation programs at the Recreation Center.
- Capacity to manage large crowds and high noise levels.
- Knowledge of techniques and methods for supervising recreational activities; equipment used in games, sports, and other activities; and principles of planning and directing group recreational activities.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective public relations.
- Ability to function effectively as part of a team.
