Job summary

City of University Park is seeking a temporary Youth Services Assistant to deliver excellent customer service, manage library materials, and support youth programming. The role requires frequent interaction with patrons and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy public library.

Primary duties include coordinating story times, assisting patrons with resources, shelving, and keeping displays neat. Hours are limited: Tue/Wed 9am–1pm with additional eight hours weekly scheduled Tue–Sat.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework preferred.
• Paid or volunteer experience working with youth.
• Experience planning and/or presenting programs to appropriate audiences using books, crafts, and other activities.

Responsibilities

• Primary assignment will be in Youth Services; however, the employee will be cross-trained and may assist in other areas as needed.
• Provides youth programming, readers' advisory, and outreach services to library patrons.
• Assists patrons with selecting materials and using digital resources.
• Plans and presents weekly story times for children of various ages to meet the needs of the community.
• Records program attendance for statistical purposes.
• Coordinates and maintains library displays in the Youth Services area of the library.
• Responds to routine patron inquiries in person, by telephone, and through other communication channels.
• Pulls, processes, and manages requested library materials.
• Shelves, straightens, and maintains library collections in proper order.
• Conducts shelf reading and searches for lost or missing materials.
• Maintains a welcoming, organized, and customer-focused library environment.
• Performs other duties as required.
