Job summary

Columbus Metropolitan Library’s Southeast Branch is seeking a Youth Engagement Specialist to energize youth and families through literacy programs and informal engagements aligned with our Young Minds Strategy.

You will develop and deliver programs, conduct outreach to schools and community partners, and support collection activities while maintaining welcoming spaces and ensuring a safe, engaging environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree required.
• 2-3 years’ experience working with youth or community engagement required.
• Experience delivering programs and services to diverse audiences preferred.
• Interest and ability to serve and develop rapport with youth and their caregivers.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Provides high level customer service by engaging youth and families with library resources, activities and programs.
• Creates a safe, welcoming environment balancing a fun atmosphere with relationship building and learning.
• Plans, promotes and presents programs for children at the location and off-site.
• Answers questions and refers to sources of information using various tools.
• Connects with schools and community organizations to promote Young Minds programs and services.
• Diffuses youth confrontations, mediates and reduces tensions.
• Performs collection management for juvenile materials; creates displays and merchandises materials.
• Ensures children’s and teen areas are neat, orderly and appealing.
• Maintains skills through trainings and professional development discussions.
• Uses library systems and equipment; follows procedures, policies, and operations.
• Supports library policies, including Code of Conduct; reports safety concerns.
• Performs other duties and may serve on taskforces or committees.
• Assumes operation of the location in the absence of a manager.
