Job summary

Durham County Government’s Youth Home seeks staff to monitor, supervise, and counsel juveniles to prevent acting-out or harm. Working under supervision, you will manage routines, respond to incidents, and coordinate with staff to maintain safety and order.

Candidates need an associate degree in criminal justice or a related field (or a high school diploma with relevant experience). A four-week JJO certification, CPR, and a valid NC driver license are required within the first year.

Qualifications

• Requires an associate degree in criminal justice or related field.
• Alternatively, high school diploma with two years experience working with juveniles.
• Ability to follow procedures while supervising youth.
• Effective oral and written communication; maintain routine records.

Responsibilities

• Provides security and supervision of juveniles detained at the Durham County Youth Home.
• Monitors behavior of juveniles to maintain order and prevent injuries or escapes.
• Monitors juveniles to ensure proper personal hygiene.
• Supervises juveniles in the maintenance of sleeping and recreational areas.
• Receives and processes information on juveniles admitted and release from detention.
• Follows standard procedures when admitting and releasing juveniles.
• Communicates daily with court and police personnel.
• Administers medication to juveniles as prescribed by medical personnel.
