Qualifications

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of work experience providing care, supervision, or custody of children in juvenile justice, group home, shelter care, or foster care environments.
• Two years of work experience within the juvenile justice system.
• Post high school education with courses in social work, psychology, sociology, or related field.
• Eighteen years of age or older upon appointment.
• Clear caregiver and criminal background checks with no felonies unless pardoned.
• Pre-hire drug and alcohol testing.
• Pre-employment physical and audiogram.
• Fingerprints and background checks.
• Must meet work-related transportation requirements.
• Completed Basic Juvenile Detention Officer Training or complete training within 12 months.
• Will complete 24 hours of annual recertification training.

Responsibilities

• Supervise juveniles in secure detention and enforce facility policies.
• Interact with juveniles individually or in groups to provide a rehabilitative influence.
• Observe behavior and screen for abuse, drug issues, or mental health needs; take appropriate action.
• Admit and discharge juveniles; maintain required documentation.
• Respond to emergencies and diffuse potentially dangerous situations.
• Provide for health, safety, meals, laundry, recreation, and transportation needs of residents.
