Job summary

Eau Claire County is seeking a Corporal to maintain order and direct daily jail operations by supervising staff responsible for inmate custody, security, and transportation during assigned shifts.

The role requires strong leadership, scheduling, training, policy enforcement, and the ability to respond to emergencies, with an emphasis on safety and compliance with jail standards. A high school diploma and Wisconsin jail certification or the ability to obtain it within 12 months are required.

Qualifications

• Active observation of correctional officers to maintain order, safety, and security.
• Motivational leadership to guide jail staff and manage workload and staffing levels.
• Consultation to staff on rules interpretations and handling sensitive situations.
• Knowledge of jail standards and training procedures to ensure compliance and performance.
• Observation of inmates' mental/physical conditions to supervise welfare and housing decisions.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, train, coach, and mentor jail staff; enforce policies and evaluate performance.
• Coordinate scheduling, time off requests, and staffing levels; back up to officers as needed.
• Assist staff in duties and provide guidance in routine matters and rule interpretation.
• Monitor compliance with procedures; provide ongoing training in documentation and techniques.
• Assess inmate welfare and coordinate referrals for health, housing, and safety needs.
• Communicate incidents and concerns to supervisors; manage emergencies and incident reports.
