Job summary

City of New York, Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) offers a Youth Apprentice program for current high school students. The role is restricted to enrolled students and emphasizes learning by shadowing DAP staff, assisting with outreach to contracted providers, and helping collect and summarize data.

As a Youth Apprentice (Job Code 10239), you will support project coordination, track progress, prepare simple reports, and act as a liaison within DYCD to gain hands-on experience

Qualifications

  • Employment is restricted to students enrolled in and attending high school.
  • Continuation as a high school student is required.
  • Fulfillment of all minimum age requirements for NYS DOL Registered Apprenticeships.

Responsibilities

  • Shadow DAP staff and learn about discretionary award processes and contract development.
  • Assist with outreach to contracted providers and maintain contact information in systems.
  • Collect and analyze data and prepare summary reports on project progress.
  • Represent DYCD as a liaison on inter-unit and special projects.

The New York City Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) invests in a network of community-based organizations and programs to alleviate the effects of poverty and to provide opportunities for New Yorkers and communities to flourish.

Employment in this title is restricted to students enrolled in and attending high school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a high school student.

FIRST YEAR – Orientation and Introduction to Work Fall/Winter 2023
  • HSSAs will shadow the work of DAP staff and learn about:
    • NYC Discretionary Award Process (e.g., from budget to cleared list of awards)
    • Discretionary Award contract development (e.g., completing a contract submission)
    • Program quality monitoring and compliance (e.g., confirming services and reporting)
    • Supporting our communities through Awardees (e.g., CB & TA, promoting partnerships, etc.)
  • Spring/summer 2024, HSSAs will continue to shadow DAP staff and begin to assist in:
    1. Conducting outreach to contracted providers by:
      1. Updating CBO contact information in DAP systems (e.g., check cleared list against ECMS)
      2. Obtaining End of Year Reports and/or assisting with desk reviews (e.g., assisting with follow-up calls)
    2. Tracking project progress by:
      1. Collecting and analyzing data (e.g., assisting with tracking project progress)
      2. Preparing summary reports (e.g., making sure information is up to date and presentable)
  • Additionally, HSSAs will also assist with DYCD inter-unit and other special projects where they will be responsible for representing DAP as a liaison.
YEARS 2 AND 3

As HSA skills develop and experience increases, greater responsibility and involvement in the above will be delegated to each aide.
