Job summary

The University of Pikeville invites applicants for a Research Assistant position (Prater) that conducts field surveys and supports biology research off-campus at The Breaks Interstate Park, with some on-campus work possible.

Responsibilities include data collection, entry, and collaboration with faculty. Pay is $10.50/hour, with part-time, flexible scheduling and emphasis on safety and accuracy in field data handling.

Qualifications

• Conduct outdoor field surveys to collect biological, ecological, or environmental data.
• Record, organize, and maintain accurate field notes and data sheets using digital or written formats.
• Assist with setup, calibration, and use of field research equipment (e.g., GPS units, sampling nets, environmental sensors).
• Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and peers to complete field projects and research goals.
• Ensure safety protocols are followed in outdoor environments (use of protective gear, awareness of hazards).
• Contribute to data entry, preliminary analysis, and preparation of research reports or presentations.
• Engage respectfully with local communities, landowners, and partners during off-campus fieldwork.
• Demonstrate initiative by learning new field methods, research tools, and environmental monitoring techniques.
