Job summary

Elgin Community College seeks a part-time tutor to help students improve writing skills across classes, not limited to English. You will provide grammar and punctuation support, formatting, and guidance at any stage of the writing process.

The role emphasizes in-person tutoring at ECC with emphasis on reliability, student confidentiality, and sensitivity to diverse backgrounds. Prior teaching experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in English, writing, or related area.
• Must be responsible and punctual.
• Must possess sensitivity to the needs of disadvantaged/at-risk students.
• Must possess sensitivity for students of all cultures and backgrounds.
• Willingness to tutor students with disabilities.

Responsibilities

• Help students improve their writing skills on assignments for any class.
• Reinforce classroom instruction and maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning.
• Maintain student records and timesheets.
• Attend department meetings and training sessions; participate in discussions.
• Refer students to the Write Place Director or Senior Director of Academic Support Services.
