Job summary

Marquette University seeks a Writing Specialist to provide academic support for approximately 280 EOP undergraduates and 25 McNair Scholars. The role focuses on tutoring, seminar design, and workshops to help students overcome personal and academic barriers and achieve a Marquette degree.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with at least three years of high school and/or college level teaching experience.
  • Masters degree with at least one year of high school or college level teaching experience.
  • Current knowledge of educational methods and materials.
  • Familiarity with course content and academic expectations of faculty teaching core courses in respective discipline and with educational software and assistive technologies.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work both independently and Collaboratively.

Responsibilities

  • Tutor EOP students in planning/composing/writing/revising and presenting writing assignments.
  • Design and teach up to three sections per academic term of non-credit EOP Freshman Seminar to develop participants' communication and study skills.
  • Conduct support workshops and seminars that complement assignments and learning objectives of Marquette courses in which EOP students are enrolled.
  • Teach McNair Research Writing summer class.
  • Mentor upper-level McNair Scholars in conducting research.
  • Critique student drafts of writing assignments and coach/rehearse students for successful delivery of academic presentations in classes or at professional conferences.
  • Counsel EOP students in writing and revising resumes, personal statements, letters of application for graduate school, scholarships, internships, and employment.
  • Prepare and submit written recommendations for applicants to graduate school and for internships or scholarships.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of student performance and services provided.
  • Present at/participate in Marquette campus-wide literacy events and professional conferences.
  • Attend scheduled meetings and group activities.
  • Serve as liaison with faculty and as staff resource person for job-related writing projects.
  • Responsibilities include availability to work with students during some evening hours.

The Writing Specialist, EOP is primarily responsible for providing academic support services to approximately 280 low-income, first-generation college or underrepresented minority undergraduates enrolled in the EOP Student Support Services program at Marquette University, with a goal of helping them overcome personal and academic barriers to success in earning a Marquette degree. The position also serves approximately 25 students enrolled in the Ronald E. McNair Scholars program, assisting students who aspire to the doctorate develop skills to conduct research and compose compelling research papers.

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Tutor EOP students in methods of planning/composing/writing/revising and presenting writing assignments for Marquette courses.
  2. Design and teach up to three sections per academic term of non-credit EOP Freshman Seminar to develop participants' communication and study skills.
  3. Conduct support workshops and seminars that complement assignments and learning objectives of Marquette courses in which EOP students are enrolled (e.g. how to interpret professors' instructions for writing assignments, conduct library and Internet research, prepare and present presentations; serve as resource for summer session seminar leaders).
  4. Teach McNair Research Writing summer class.
  5. Mentor upper-level McNair Scholars in conducting research.
  6. Critique student drafts of writing assignments and coach/rehearse students for successful delivery of academic presentations in classes or at professional conferences.
